JAVA RIVER COFFEE CO.
Owners: Shawn Hash, Chad Roberts, Tyrell Hash and Denny Penry
Location: 1055 Norwood St. in downtown Radford
Phone: 731-4170
Products: The shop has a variety of coffees, teas, and pastries, including three "coffees of the day" daily. Java River also has a small lounge area with a television and fireplace that is suitable for informal meetings. Musicians perform on some evenings, including Thursdays from 8 p.m. to midnight, which is open-mike night.
The owners stress quality, customer service and decor. "Educating the public is big with us," Shawn Hash said. "We really pride ourselves in trying to spend time with people to let them know about the different coffees and drinks."
Prices: A small cup of coffee to go costs 85 cents. Larger sizes, other drinks and food prices vary.
About the owners: Shawn Hash and Chad Roberts are the principal operators of the Java River, which opened its doors March 13. Hash, 27, is part-owner also of Tangent Outfitters in Dublin and Elk Mountain Outfitters, near Snowshoe Ski Resort in West Virginia. Roberts, 24, is a sometime-graduate student at Radford University who is thinking about attending law school. Hash started thinking about opening a coffee shop in Radford last summer, and the idea was sealed when the partners were able to get a good deal on some used equipment. The store is in the former Crigler's Shoes store, which closed after 45 years with the owners' retirement.
