Wytheville dean heads national group

WYTHEVILLE - William M. Dixon, dean of financial and administrative services at Wytheville Community College, is the new president of the Southern Association of College and University Business Officers.

The organization serves 14 states promoting professional development activities, continuing education and ethical standards for its 950 college and university members.

As its 69th president, Dixon is the second Virginian and third community college representative to lead the organization.

Retirement center opens new wing

WYTHEVILLE - Residents have started moving into a new 19-room wing at Asbury Center at Birdmont, a United Methodist-related retirement and health care center.

Each room can accommodate one or two people. Assistance with daily living activities is available where needed.

"It has been gratifying to see our accommodations and services expand over the years," said the Rev. William S. Rodgers, who has been administrator for 14 years. "We are keeping pace with the changing needs of senior adults in our area, as well as the anticipated changes in the health-care delivery system in Virginia."

The 50-acre retirement center is one of six Asbury Centers, the others being located in Tennessee. The Wytheville center serves 250 people, and opened in 1987.

Industrial authority studying new sites

WYTHEVILLE - The Wythe County Joint Industrial Development Authority is planning a new 1,200-acre industrial park but currently has no place ready for a large industry, if it found one.

Members Tom Green, Pete Viars and Chairman Jack Baumgardner will act as a committee to work on the site problem. The authority had planned to excavate 30,000 square feet on unused land in its almost-full Fairview Industrial Park, but found that rock and other factors would make it too expensive.

The authority has secured options on two tracts of land for the proposed new park, and will look for an engineering firm to study both tracts.

Concert planned

WYTHEVILLE - The 90-member Wytheville Community College Concert Band will perform its annual spring concert at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the George Wythe High School auditorium. Admission is free.

Under the direction of Jack O. White, the concert features a variety of marches, popular standards and classical concert pieces such as selections from the "Tony Bennett Unplugged" album, from Wagner's "Lohengrin" and Brahms' "Hungarian Dance No. 5," Bartok's "Allegro Barbaro" and Barker's "Symphonic Rhapsody," an arrangement of "Danny Boy," a medley of Civil War tunes, and the Huffine march, "Them Brasses."

This will complete the band's seventh year. Its members include more than 20 band directors, former directors and music teachers.
