CELEBRATIONS ANNIVERSARIES

Caldwell anniversary

James and Ella Caldwell of Catawba celebrated their 69th anniversary on April 27, 1996. The celebration was held in New Castle, and hosted by their daughters, Joel Morefield and Jane Blair. The couple was married April 30, 1927 in Tarpon, Va. They have live in Catawba for 27 years. She's the former Ella Hill. Their children are Joel Morefield of New Castle, Jane Blair of Salem, B.R. Caldwell of Catawba, and Dan Caldwell of Abingdon. They have 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren. They are members of McDonalds Mill Methodist Church

Kingery anniversary

On May 4, 1996 Arlie L. and Ruth St. John Kingery will celebrate 50 years of marriage. In honor of their parents Golden Anniversary, Ruby Shepherd, Lee Kingery, and Bonnie Hutchison have provided a trip for their parents with visits in Chicago, Kansas City, the Rocky Mountains, and San Francisco.

McCrickard anniversary

James W. and Mabel Lovern McCrickard celebrated their 50th anniversary on May 2, 1996. The celebration was held at Big Spring Baptist Church. It was hosted by Janet Armel and Jewel Jones. The couple was married May 2, 1946 in Roanoke, Va. She's the former Mabel Marie Lovern. Their children are Jeannie Wilson of Gainesville, Fla., Janet Armel of Elliston, Va., Jack McCrickard of Christiansburg, Va., and Jewel Jones of Elliston, Va. They have 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

McGrady anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. James Frank McGrady celebrated their 50th anniversary April 21, 1996 at Belmont Christian Church. The couple was married April 20, 1946 in Wesleyan Methodist Church in Blacksburg by the Rev. Earl Gentry. She's the former Ruth M. Sowers. Their children are Ralph McGrady, Joyce Ratliff, Robin Beeken and Cindy Linkous. They have eight grandchildren and two step grandchildren. They are members of Mountain Top Mission Church.

Out-of-town guests attending the celebration were Barton and Virginia McGrady from Delaware, Charles and Dee Norris, and Bobby and Faye Jernigan from N.C.

After serving in World War II, Jim worked for the State Highway Dept., then went to work at the Lynchburg Foundry in Radford, where he retired.

Ruth started out working at Imperial Reading in Christiansburg, then started babysitting. Over the past 28 years, she has kept over 70 children and is still taking care of two grandchildren with Jims help.

The family would like to thank everyone that lent a hand and a special thanks to Frances Poff. Belinda Alderidge, Patsy Duncan, Sharon Sowers, and Gladys Howery, all who helped make this special occasion a big success.

Smith anniversary

Violet and Sam Smith are celebrating their 50th anniversary on May 5, 1996. The celebration is an open house event on May 5 from 2-5 p.m. held at their home, 5723 Crescent Blvd., Roanoke, and hosted by their daughters, Rebecca and Freda. The couple was married May 2, 1946, in Roanoke. Natives of Copper Hill, they have lived in Roanoke for 50+ years. Mrs. Smith is the former Violet Wilson. The couple's children are Rebecca Sink and Freda Smith Carper, both of Roanoke. They have one grandchild, Harold Sink, Jr. Mr. Smith is retired from Appalachian Power Company and Mrs. Smith is a housewife.

Zimmerman anniversary

Guy E. and Jean P. Zimmerman celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family Sunday, May 5th, at the Homeplace. They were united in marriage on May 6, 1946. She is the former Jean Price of Salem. She worked for C & P Telephone Company in Norfolk and 181/2 years for Avon. He served as a Gunners Mate 2nd Class in the Navy during World War II and was stationed in the South Pacific. He worked 15 years in the Roanoke Fire Department and the Roanoke Lifesaving Crew Dispatchers Office. He is a lifetime member of the Crew. He is now employed for Oakey's Vinton Chapel. They reside in Salem. Their children and spouses are Joyce Z. and Ray Sarver of Vinton; Ronnie and Gail Zimmerman of Montvale; and Debbie Z. and Jeff Weems of Boones Mill. Their grandchildre n are Nicole Sarver; Keith, Josh and Ryan Zimmerman; and Jeff, Travis and Tyler Weems
