Fishermen are working the night shift with good results in the Cave Spring Optimist Club Fishing Tournament on Smith Mountain Lake.
While walleye fishing traditionally is good at this time of year, bass fishing has been surprisingly good, as well.
A rapala crankbait was the bait of choice for Kevin Poff of Salem, who weighed in a 6-pound, 9-ounce largemouth at 3 a.m. Saturday to take the lead in that division. Poff caught the bass near Hales Ford Bridge.
Kenneth Stewart of Matheny, W.Va., also worked late Saturday, using a zoom worm. He weighed a 4-pound, 4-ounce smallmouth at 12:30 a.m. Stewart caught the smallie in the Blackwater River arm of the lake.
``The last two years, they've caught a lot of walleye at night, but it's unusual to catch the amount of bass they've been catching at night,'' said Mark Raskin of the Cave Spring Optimist Club.
Raskin said another smallmouth came in that would have won the tournament, but it was dead, and the rules state that no dead fish may be weighed.
The leading walleye came in at 4:45 a.m. Saturday and was caught on a crankbait in the Roanoke River arm by Robert Terry III of Roanoke.
In the crappie category, Gary Hall of Rocky Mount used a jig to catch a 2-pound, 12-ounce fish in the Blackwater arm.
Donald Horn of Wirtz took the lead in the catfish category with a 15-pound, 9-ounce whopper caught on live shad in the Blackwater arm.
No muskies have been weighed.
The tournament, which has 735 competitors, concludes today at noon.
