PULITZER BUYING CHAIN OF PAPERS BASED IN VA.

Pulitzer Publishing Co. announced Monday that it has agreed to buy Scripps League Newspapers of Charlottesville, Va., for between $230 million and $240 million.

Pulitzer publishes the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and The Arizona Daily Star of Tucson and owns nine network-affiliated television stations and two radio stations.

Scripps League is a privately held publisher of 16 dailies, mostly in small cities in the Midwest and West. It also publishes about 30 weeklies and shoppers. It is not affiliated with Cincinnati-based E.W. Scripps Co.

The final price will depend on the number of papers Pulitzer buys.
