A pair of all-state girls' basketball players, Shellie Johnson from Salem High School and Melissa Cantrell from Floyd County High School, have accepted grants-in-aid.
Johnson, a two-time Blue Ridge District player of the year, has signed a letter of intent with Elon (N.C.) College. Johnson averaged 19.7 points as a senior at Salem, when she was named first-team All-Group AA and first-team All-Timesland.
Johnson, a 5-foot-8 guard, finished her Salem career with 1,174 points.
Cantrell, the Group A player of the year, signed with Bluefield College. She averaged 15 points and 6.5 assists as a senior and led the Timesland area in 3-point percentage.
Cantrell, also 5-8, scored 1,120 points in her high school career and made second-team All-Timesland as a senior.
In men's recruiting, Concord (W.Va.) College has reached into the Roanoke Valley District for a pair of signees, 6-6 center Sterling Tate from William Fleming and point guard Jamar McNair from Pulaski County.
McNair, a first-team all-district selection, averaged 15.6 points and four assists as a junior. Tate, who underwent off-season knee surgery for the second consecutive year, averaged 12.6 points during the last nine games and 9.4 for the season.
VMI, coming off a turnaround 18-10 season, has signed 6-3 Aaron Demory from Woodbridge High School.
Demory was named All-Commonwealth District and All-Northwest Region and was chosen to the All-Met team picked by the Washington Post - the first All-Met player from Woodbridge in coach Will Robinson's tenure.
Demory, who played in the post for Woodbridge, averaged 18.3 points and 8.7 rebounds and had 36 dunks for a Vikings team that went 19-5.
