George Charlton received the Lion of the Year award at the Christiansburg Lions Club's 55th Charter banquet held in February. Charlton, a member since 1988, has served as chairman of the Sight Committee for six years. Raper Shelton and Siebert Simpkins, charter members, were honored for their service.
Jim Johnson, Blacksburg, was awarded the "Distinguished Citizen Award" by the Town of Blacksburg. Johnsonhas served the community in a variety of roles for more than two decades. While Chairman of the Library Board for Blacksburg Branch Library, he led a campaign that raised $300,000 for furnishings. He is a charter member of the Rotary Club and worked with the Greater Blacksburg Chamber of Commerce.
The March meeting of the Southside Garden Club was held at the home of Layel Zelazny with Louise Russell serving as co-hostess.
Lucille Mosely and Louise Russell received certificates from the National Council of Garden Clubs. Darlene Simpson and Susan Caceci received blue ribbons for their designs. Simpson received a blue ribbon for horticulture.
Margaret Leonard, Radford Community Hospital Auxiliary member, has been elected Southwest District Chairman of the Virginia Association of Hospital Auxiliaries for a two-year term.
Nadine C. Allen and Marie Livermore of Blacksburg, Jean Nelson of Christiansburg, Mary Whitehurst of Draper, and Z. L. Feng and Yumiko Ichikawa of Radford have had paintings accepted in the Seventeenth Virginia Watercolor Society Juried Exhibition for 1996.
The girls at Dancer's Dreams of Christiansburg recently qualified in the preliminary of the "I Love Dance" Pageant to attend the International Championship Conventions in Orlando, Lake Tahoe, and New York City this summer. The group had 14 first place winners, 4 second place winners, and 4 third place winners and one overall winner. Amy Rush, director, won the "I Love Dance" Teacher's Award. Dancer's Dreams won the Excellence Award.
Brad Dunlaney, son of Kathy and Haden Dulaney of Shawsville and Melissa Sumner, daughter of Daniel Sumner of Christiansburg appeared in the annual Emory & Henry College Workshop in April.
Cindy Harrison won Best Speaker in the New River Phoenix Toastmaster Club's annual International Speech Contest held in March. Harrison's speech was "Motor Voter." Curtis Graham won the title of Best Table Topics speaker. Graham's speech was "Why Should I Vote?"
The April meeting of the Mountain View Garden Club was held at the home of Janet Buss with Nelda Buss serving as co-hostess.
Gary and Janet Buss, owners of Gary Buss Studio, gave a presentation on photography and a tour of their studio.
Blacksburg's Southside Garden Club won the most awards for a local Blue Ridge Chapter for the Blue Ridge District Meeting. Darlene Simpson won awards for "Yearbook," Best Slide Program," Scrapbook," "Horticulture-Herbs," "Roadside Improvement," "Bird Appreciation," "Standard of Excellence Award," "Garden Therapy," and "Most Award Submissions."
