CROMER, Louise Graves, 77, of Blacksburg, passed away Sunday, May 5, 1996 at her home. She had worked as a child care giver for almost five decades, caring for and enriching the lives of many children. She raised seven children almost entirely by herself. She was not only a very loving mother but also a loving person to everyone and always giving of herself. She dedicated her life to her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Houston Cromer and a daughter, Barbara Jean Cromer. She is lovingly survived by two daughters, Carolyn Wimmer of Springfield, Katherine C. Sage of Blacksburg; five sons, Charles F. Cromer, John H. Cromer Jr., Stephen R. Cromer all of Christiansburg, Timothy Cromer, Rocky Gap and Larry L. Cromer, Sumter, S.C.; two sisters, Margaret Shaver and Pauline Brookner both of Blacksburg; one brother, Charlie Graves of Salem; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, 1996 in the chapel of the McCoy Funeral Home with the Rev. Frederick A. Brugger officiating. Interment will follow in Westview Cemetery. The family, with hearts filled with love and sorrow, will receive friends at the McCoy Funeral Home, Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

DENT, Joseph Baker, Sr., 91, of Petersburg, formerly of Blacksburg, widower of Hilda Carpenter Dent, died Monday, May 6, 1996 at Johnston Willis Hospital. R. Dent was born in Foster Falls, Va. and was the son of the late Charles Lee and Betty Dent of Pulaski, Va. He was Professor Emerit us of Engineering Fundamentals at Virginia Tech. Surviving are two sons and daughter-in-law, Joseph B., Jr. and Sue Reasor Dent of Chester, I. B. Dent of Hays, Kansas; two granddaughters, Carol Lee Kelley of Glen Allen and Kay Peach of Chester; one grandson, Joseph B. Dent III of Chester; and nine great-grandchildren. KNICK, Clara Entsminger, 95, of Low Moor, died Monday, May 6, 1996 at the Brian Center Nursing Home. She was born June 27, 1900 in Rockbridge Co., a daughter of the late Robert D. and Ida Roberta Entsminger. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Herman Knick in 1977. Survivivng are three daughters, Mrs. James M. (Leola) McClung Jr., and Mrs. Robert J. (Pauline) Kelley both of Covington and Mrs. Madeline Colwell of Augusta, Ga.; one son and daughter-in-law, Edward Paige and Pat Knick of Buena Vista; one sister, Mrs. Roxie Craft of Covington; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Arritt Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. William M. Hartsfield officiating. LACKEY, Christopher Columbus, 83, of Roanoke, died Sunday, May 5, 1996. Mr. Lackey moved to Roanoke in 1917 and entered the military in 1932, where he served in the Panama Canal. He then married Laura Harris in 1939 and worked, for many years, at Thurman & Boone Company in Roanoke and in recent years at Shipplet, Burnett, Lackey TV & Appliance of Roanoke. He was preceded in death by his wife, Laura Harris Lackey, and one brother, Waldon J. Lackey. He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Robert Dale and Roxanne N. Lackey, Kernersville, N.C.; four brothers, Clarence H. Lackey, Hayes, Kansas, Horace D. Lackey, S. J. Lackey, Carl V. Lackey, all of Roanoke; four sisters, Kathryn Akers, Winchester, Lois Kinsey, Roanoke, Audrey Ellis, Las Vegas, Nevada, Phyllis Webb, Roanoke; three grandchildren, Michelle L. Heafner, Lauren Lackey and Jason Lackey; three great-grandchildren, Eric B. Pope, Kayla M. Heafner and Laura A. Heafner; one brother-in-law, Claude A. Harris, Daleville. LEE, Kevin Jeffrey, 35, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, May 4, 1996. He was a member of the Class of 1978 at William Fleming High School. He was preceded in death by his father, Garland L. ``Mack'' Lee, and a brother, Allen L. Lee . Surviving are son, Jeffrey Allen Lee; mother, Eleanor Wood Lee; brother, Gary W. McGUIRE, John Daniel, 84, of Pembroke, died Sunday evening May 5, 1996, in Montgomery Regional hospital following a short illness. Born in Pembroke, he was a son of the late Van Buren and Lura Martin McGuire. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army in World War II and retired from the N & W Railroad. He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Cox McGuire of Pembroke; three sons, James B. McGuire and John Sherwood McGuire, both of Pearisburg, and Albert Glenwood McGuire of Pembroke; one daughter, Mary P. Watkins of Pembroke; one brother, Pat McGuire of Pembroke; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. Graveside funeral services will be performed Wednesday, May 8, 1996, at Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg with the Rev. Eddie Kendall officiating. METZ, Dalphine Fitzpatrick, (``Granny""), 90, of Raleigh Court Health Care Center, Roanoke, went to be with the Lord, Sunday evening, May 5, 1996. She was a member of First Baptist Church and the former Love Bible Class there. Mrs. Metz was the daughter of the late J. W. Fitzpatrick and Minnie W. Fitzpatrick. Surviving are a daughter, Janet M. Graves, Salem; two grandchildren, James W. Graves II and his wife, Debbie, Roanoke, Kathy G. Price and her husband, David, Roanoke; three great-granddaughters, Jennifer Ann Price, Betsy Leigh Graves, Sarah Elizabeth Price; a great-grandson, Spencer Allen Graves. MOTLEY, Lucy Regina Bryson, 33, of Shawsville, went into the loving arms of Jesus on Saturday, May 4, 1996. Her smile and loving spirit has touched the lives of many and we know that her smile is now lighting up Heaven. She was a member of Shawsville Baptist Church Youth Choir, New River Valley Gospel Singers and went on the earn a Certificate and worked as a CNA at Lewis-Gale Medical Center until her illness. She was preceded in death by her father, Leroy Bryson, Sr. and grandmother, Ida Bryson. She is survived by her loving mother and stepfather, Phoebe and Dallas Wiley; one son, Justin L. Motley; one brother, Leroy Bryson, Jr., all of Shawsville; grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Lawrence McClanahan, Pulaski; a devoted aunt, Carolyn Willis, Shawsville; special friends, D. PARKS, Edward Collins, 75, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, May 5, 1996. He was a veteran of World II and a member of the 99th Fighter Squardron Tuskegee Airmen. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Lee and Henry Clay Parks; sister, Pauline Clouris Moss. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Vivian R. Parks, Roanoke; two daughters, Barbara Parks Saunders, Atlanta, Ga., Edwina P. Parks, Roanoke; two nephews, Bishop D. (Sandra) Moss Jr., Roswell, Ga.; Paul E. Moss, Dublin, Ga.; two great-nephew; and one-great niece, all of Roswell, Ga.; a host of other relatives and friends. PAULEY, Gene Edward, 55, of Chester, died Monday, May 6, 1996 in Johnston-Willis Hospital. Mr. Pauley was a retired crew leader with the Virginia Department of Transportation. He is survived by his wife, Barbara J. Pauley, of the home; a daughter, Beth P. Bartlett of Chester; a grandson, J. Aaron Bartlett of Chester; a sister and brother-in-law, Ella P. and Ronald A. Higginbotham; and a niece, Melissa L. Higginbotham, all of Roanoke. Three other nieces and four other nephews also survive. REED, Katherine, Tinsley, 76, of Roanoke, died Monday, May 6, 1996. She was the daughter of Edward W. and Ruby S. Tinsley and the widow of Walter G. Thomas. Mrs. Reed graduated from Jefferson High School, Roanoke College, and was retired from Shenandoah Life Insurance Company. Surviving are her husband, Frank L. Born in New York City, and a resident of Waldwick and Washington D.C. before moving to Roanoke, Va. 12 years ago. A profit analyst for the Norfolk Southern Corporation in Roanoke for the past 20 years. Surviving are her husband, Herman R. Ricker; her mother, June Cater, Waldwick; and a brother, Jack E. SMITH, William D. Sr., 70, of Roanoke, died Sunday, May 5, 1996, at Lewis-Gale Hospital. He was a World War II veteran and retired in 1980 after 36 years service with the U.S. Government. Mr. Smith was a member of McDaniel Lodge #86, AF & AM, and a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason. Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Marie Whitlock Smith; two sons, William D. Smith Jr. of Eldon, Mo. and Larry W. SUMNER, Lloyd Q., 52, of Riner, native of Carroll County, died suddenly on May 3, 1996, in Manassas, Virginia. He is the son of the late Henry and Naomi Sumner, and brother of the late Rev. Otto Sumner and Ruth Love. His surviving family members include his wife, Jean; brothers, Leo, Paul, and Glenn; as well as sisters, Mary Cox, Blanche Griffin, and Violet Galyean. A memorial service will be held at Blue Ridge Chapel Baptist Church (mile post 208 along the Blue Ridge Parkway) at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 11, 1996. Lloyd's lifelong love of nature, especially trees, lead to his becoming an artisan who preserved the beauty and spirit of wood through his creations. TAYLOR, Harbour Leath Jr., (``H. L.''), 74, of 115 Lakemont Ct., Martinsville, died Sunday, May 5, 1996, at Martinsville Convalescent Center. He was born September 20, 1921, in Crumpler, W.Va., son of the late Harbour L. Taylor Sr. and Bessie Shough Taylor, Mr. Taylor was co-founder with his brother, Frank Taylor, of Frank's Food Fair and later founded and owned Taylors Supermarket for over 32 years. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Martinsville. He was a volunteer of the American Red Cross at Memorial Hospital, Martinsville-Henry Co. He was a member of the Elks Club. He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Walker Taylor of the home; daughter, Mrs. Warren (Selma) Smith of Martinsville; sisters, Christine Taylor of Martinsville, Georgia Schilling of Martinsville, Delores Whetstone of Richmond, Polly Goff of Severna Park, Md.; brothers, Carter W. Taylor of Roanoke, Mac W. Taylor of Martinsville; two grandchildren, Karen Yvonne Smith and Kirk Taylor Smith. TAYLOR, William Ernest Jordan, (``Ernie""), 45, of Roanoke, went to be with his Lord, Sunday, May 5, 1996. He was preceded in death by his mother, Virginia Taylor; and his father, Harry W. Taylor. He served in the U.S. Navy after graduation from Jefferson High School in 1969. He is survived by his grandmother, Tula Mae Dickson; three sons, Randy Jay and his wife, Jodie, Jeffrey Jason and his wife, Cindy, and their mother, Debbie Taylor, Christopher Jared and his mother, Sherry Coley; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Lanny and Linda, of Roanoke, Larry and Mona, of Covington; two sisters, Pat Agnew, of Roanoke, Cathy Taylor, of Salem; four grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Margie Sizemore, Calvin Manspile. Funeral services will be conducted at the Chapel of John M. Oakey & Son, Salem, Wednesday, May 8, 1996, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Loraine Taylor, Pastor of Grace Assembly of God, Catawba, officiating. WOOD, Luther, 89, of Ferrum, died Monday, May 6, 1996 at Eldercare of Franklin County. Born January 22, 1907, in Frank lin County, he was the eldest son of the late Henry and Allie Wood. Mr. Wood was retired from MW Manufacturers, and was a member of Mill Creek Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by one sister, Mamie Wood Bowling. Mr. Wood is survived by his wife of 66 years, Evy L. Wood of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Howard K. and Phyllis H. Wood, Corolla, N.C.; one daughter, Freeda W. Watson, Ferrum; three grandchildren, William Howard Wood, Richmond, Anne W. and Bryan Rutter, Richmond, Melissa A. Watson and Brentwood Gray Voltz, Raleigh, N.C.; one great-granddaughter, Ashleigh Rutter, Richmond; one brother, Cecil Wood, Rocky Mount.
