Chris Childress, the Blue Ridge District player of the year in basketball, has signed a letter-of-intent with NAIA power David Lipscomb of Nashville, Tenn.
Childress, a 6-foot-3 guard from William Byrd High School, was named first-team All-Group AA and first-team All-Timesland after a senior year in which he scored 30 points or more on seven occasions and averaged 26.4 points.
Lipscomb, coached by NAIA Hall of Fame member Don Meyer, reached the final four in the NAIA Tournament and finished 33-6. Lipscomb has made the NAIA Tournament 11 times in Meyer's 21-year tenure and won the national championship in 1986.
Meyer, 50, has 621 victories in his Lipsomb career and has averaged 33 victories over the past 11 seasons. The school has an enrollment of approximately 3,000.
In other basketball:
* Ella Watson, a 6-foot-3 center from Oneida, Tenn., is the fifth women's basketball recruit at Radford University.
Watson averaged 17 points and 8.5 rebounds last season in making all-state at Oneida High School, which finished 26-8 and advanced to the Group AA state semifinals.
GOLF Virginia makes NCAA field
Virginia has received a bid to the Division I men's golf tournament for the sixth time in coach Mike Moraghan's seven-year tenure and will be joined by six ACC teams and three state teams in the East Regional from May 16-18 in Kiamesha Lake, N.Y.
The Cavaliers were one of eight District III North selections along with East Tennessee State, Clemson, Wake Forest, North Carolina, Duke, N.C. State and Virginia Commonwealth.
Three players with Roanoke high school ties - Adam Harrell of Glenvar, Scott Hunter of Cave Spring and Andy Miller of Lord Botetourt - play for George Mason, which will join James Madison among the four teams invited from District II. Rhode Island, from District I, and Temple, from District II, are the lone Atlantic 10 Conference representatives.
The top 11 teams out of 23 in the 54-hole East Regional will advance to the NCAA Championships from May 29-June 1 in Chattanooga, Tenn.
* Andrew Wagner of Pearisburg will play golf next year at Radford University.
Wagner, the top player for Giles High School, had a scoring average of 73 and won the New River District individual championship in 1995.
* Jim Kite and Claude Williamson shot a second-round 70 to finish with a two-day total of 139 as they captured the Virginia State Golf Association Senior Four-Ball Championship held at Lexington Country Club.
Kite and Williamson, who shot a 2-under-par 69 in the first round, had three birdies and two bogeys to finish at 70. Stan Fischer and Chuck Shriner, both of Richmond, finished second at 143.
TENNIS Tech player in NCAA Tournament
Oliver Mayo of Virginia Tech has earned a spot in the NCAA tennis tournament May 21-23 in Athens, Ga.
Mayo had a 26-8 record in singles play this season, leading the Hokies to the Atlantic 10 Conference championship. He swept all his matches at the No.1 position in the conference tournament and was voted the most outstanding performer.
Mayo, a native of Canberra, Australia, has played No.1 singles and posted at least 20 victories in each of his three seasons for the Hokies.
* Virginia Tech's Aaron Marchetti has been selected Regional ITA Rookie Player of the Year by the Region I awards committee. The tennis player will be considered, along with seven other regional winners, for the National Rookie of the Year award.
Marchetti led the Atlantic 10 champion Hokies in singles victories with 33. He won all three singles matches in the Atlantic 10 Conference tournament and was named the conference's most outstanding rookie performer.
* Washington and Lee defeated the University of the South 5-0 in the first round of the NCAA women's tennis championships in Kalamazoo, Mich.
The Generals (17-0) got an 8-0 victory from Natalia Garcia and Julie Ayers, the top-ranked doubles team in the nation. Other doubles winners were Berry Blankinship and Ericka Shapard (8-2), and Shelley Sunderman and Helen Chandler (8-2).
Garcia won at No.1 singles, and Chandler clinched the match at No.6 singles.
Roanoke gets ODAC lacrosse honors
Roanoke College, which went undefeated in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference in men's lacrosse, was rewarded with the coach and player of the year honors.
Bill Pilat was named coach of the year and Maroons junior defenseman Chris Davin was named player of the year. Davin was joined on the All-ODAC first team by teammates Billy Metz on attack and Chris Gordon in goal.
League runner-up Washington and Lee had five first-team selections, headed by attackman Ande Jenkins for the second year in a row. Midfielder Adam Butterworth moved up from the second team.
* At Narrows, the Green Wave girls scored 204 points in winning nine of 15 events to sweep the Mountain Empire District track meet Monday.
Melissa Lucas won five events and ran on the 400-meter relay team that won, giving her six first places. She also took first in the long and triple jumps, discus, shot and 100-meter dash.
Melissa Lawrence won the 300-meter hurdles and ran on both winning relay teams for the Green Wave.
In the boys' meet, Fort Chiswell won with 1421/2 points as Michael White (100- and 200-meter dashes) and Nathan Houchins (both hurdles) took two individual firsts and ran on the winning 1,600-meter relay team. (Complete results in Scoreboard.)
* Virginia Tech finished third overall in the Atlantic 10 Conference athletic excellence competition.
Massachusetts won the Commissioner's Cup for the second year in a row with 158 points. George Washington was second with 124 points, followed by Virginia Tech with 117.
Rounding out the competition were Rhode Island (103.5), Temple (90), La Salle (85), Xavier (81), St.Joseph's (75.5), Dayton (65), St.Bonaventure (63.5), Fordham (62) and Duquesne (59.5).
The Hokies won conference championships in men's tennis, men's golf and women's tennis, with the baseball tournament still to be contested.
Massachusetts won nine championships in the 19 sports used to determine the Commissioner's Cup standings.
* New River Valley Speedway will have a special 25-lap Legends race this weekend. The Legends cars made their first appearance at NRVS last year and will be making four stops there this year.
