An antidepressant on Tuesday became the first nonaddictive treatment for Americans with panic disorder to win government approval.
The Food and Drug Administration approved Paxil, known chemically as paroxetine hydrochloride, to treat panic disorder.
Paxil already was sold to treat depression, but the new FDA approval means manufacturer SmithKline Beechan can advertise the medicine as the only government-approved treatment for panic attacks that doesn't cause addiction - and consequently the only one that patients can use long-term.
