Raw, misty, drizzle washed out Tuesday's Carolina League baseball game between the visiting Prince William Cannons and the Salem Avalanche, pushing it into the first slot of a doubleheader tonight, beginning at 6 p.m.
Salem was tied for the best record on the circuit with the Durham Bulls entering Tuesday's action, but that's through no help from the Cannons.
Prince William has won three of four from the Avalanche, information that University of Nebraska product and Cannons coach Mark Haley may use to needle fellow Cornhusker Bill McGuire, the Salem manager.
Salem is eager to resume after a blue Monday that included a 9-4 loss to Prince William, an outing featuring 16 Cannons hits and five Salem errors.
Salem had committed only 34 errors in 30 games before Monday's fiasco and nine of those miscues were by players who are no longer with the club.
The pitching, too, has been tremendous. Salem's 3.29 team ERA is seven-hundredths of a point behind league leader Durham. Opponents' nine home runs are 10 fewer than the next lowest total in the league.
Salem's pitching has had a fit with the Cannons, though. Prince William averaged five runs and 10 hits in the first three games with Salem.
