THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF RETIRED PERSONS' local chapter recently recognized three women who have contributed to their community as part of Women's History Month. The women honored were: Pearl Fu, who has led tours, lectured and written about her native China; Elizabeth Bowles, who served as Roanoke's first vice mayor from 1976 to 1978 and on council from 1980 to 1996; and Harriet Stokes, who has promoted the arts through her work on the boards of the Art Museum of Western Virginia, the Roanoke Valley Arts Council, the City Arts Commission and Salem's Fine Arts Commission.
ARDELL STONE SCHOOL OF DANCING in Roanoke sent several students to the Dance Makers Inc. competition held recently in Charlotte, N.C.
Amanda Barnhart, Michelle Davis, Samantha King, Diane Newman, Lyndsey Reynolds and Jennifer Wilson, all members of the intermediate performing group, won first place in the jazz category and second place in tap.
Betsy Cross, Amelia Davis, Melissa Kell, Amber Mayhue, Misha Paiement, Blake Points, Katie Stockburger and Ashley Stuart, all members of the junior performing group, won second place in jazz and third place in tap.
Sarah Clyburn, Alicia Davis, Ann Lawson, Susan Lawson, Tara Lee, Maggie Light and Shannon Stanger, all members of the senior performing group, won first place in tap and second place in jazz.
The junior and senior groups performed together in the large group category and picked up first place in lyrical ballet and second place in jazz. All three groups qualified for a national competition to be held this summer in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
THE GREATER RALEIGH COURT CIVIC LEAGUE recently nominated a new slate of officers for two-year terms. They are: Mike Urbanski, president; Brenda McDaniel, vice president; Margaret Lindsey, treasurer; Mitch Wheeler, director of neighborhood affairs; Tom Mohr, director of public events; Mike Santoroski, director of publicity; and Matt Pritts, program chair.
PERNELLER CHUBB-WILSON received the L. Francis Griffin Memorial Award for excellence in leadership and civil rights at the recent Virginia State Convention of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.
Chubb-Wilson is the daughter of Perneller Chubb and the late Leon Chubb. She has seven children and 19 grandchildren.
RASHIDA JAKKI POWELL, daughter of De'vera Y. Powell has been selected a finalist for Virginia's 16th Annual Homecoming Queen Selection. Rashida is the homecoming queen at William Fleming High School.
THE ROKEVA WOMAN'S CLUB has elected new officers for the 1996-1997 year. They are: Doris Sartelle, president; Bernelle Rich, first vice president; Marriane Rose, second vice president; Anne Scott, recording secretary; Hazel Eakin, corresponding secretary; Audrey Lindsey, treasurer. Corinne Murray is parliamentarian and Carol Guilliams is adviser.
Rokeva recently won a number of district awards from the Virginia Federation of Women's Clubs, including the silver membership bowl.
THE VIRGINIA SKYLINE GIRL SCOUT COUNCIL has elected the following local residents to serve on its Board of Directors: Charles Crosson, Jr., a two-year term as treasurer; Fran Ferguson, a two-year term as member-at-large.
Also, Dana Lee and Anita Price will fill unexpired terms as members-at-large (Price will also fill a two-year term on the Council nominating committee). Paula Katz will serve a second one-year term as a Senior Girl Scout member.
Finally, Kate Genaitis and Connie Smith will serve three-year terms as national council delegates.
HISTORIC FINCASTLE INC. recently elected new officers and board members. They are: Peggy Davis, president; Page Ware, vice president; Brenda Buckner, treasurer; and Martha Neighbors and Bobby Lou Bowman, co-secretaries.
Harold Eads, Harry Kessler, Mary Westerman, Garland Jones, Susan Critzer and Gene Downs were elected to the board.
