         Floyd County Eagle Scout Christopher Haney designed and led scouts in
      the construction of a playground at the Floyd Recreatiional Park. An 
      item in Thursday's New River Current incorrectly attributed his work to 
      another scout.


NEW RIVER VALLEY PEOPLE

The April meeting of the Southside Garden Club was held at the home of Nancy O'Brien with Ann Robinson serving as co-hostess. Blue ribbon winners were Darlene Simpson for "Spring Awakening," Donna Ludwig for "April Showers." Ludwig and Layel Zelazney won red ribbons for artistic design. Martha Cheek won a yellow ribbon. Blue ribbons in horticulture were presented to Darlene Simpson, Delores Hendricks and Donna Ludwig. Joyce Beliveau was awarded a red ribbon in horticulture. Jerry Pike of Higo Garden Bonsai presented "The Art of Bonsai."

Phillip Harmon Price, an Air Force veteran from Blacksburg skied at the National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic. Price 49, is visually impaired. The event was hosted by Grand Junction, Colo., Veterans Administration Hospital.

The Riner Volunteer Fire Department 1996 election results are: Jay Altizer, chief, Harry "Butch" Nicewander, assistant chief, Mike Moles, captain, Jerry Saul, 1st lieutenant, David Duncan, 2nd lieutenant, Pat Saylors, treasurer, Billy Caldwell, secretary, Gene Moles, 1st engineer, Mavin Ogle, 2nd engineer, Bill Harris, 3rd engineer, Gary Frances, 4th engineer, Ronnie Worrell, 5th engineer, Joe Lucas, chaplin, Ron Baldwin, public relations, Gene Moles, training officer, Joe Pack, assistant training officer. New Officers elected in April for Blacksburg's Smithfield Plantation were: Wirt Wills, director, Greer Elliott, vice-director of property, Ann Edel, vice-director of programs, Nancy Felch, treasurer, Bob Paterson, recording secretary, Nancy Smith, corresponding secretary.

Chairs of branch committees are: Terri Lynn Howard, guild co-chair, Diane Hoover, museum store coordinator, Alice Payne, tour coordinator, Ellen Glover, garden coordinator, Darlene Simpson, membership coordinator, Frances H. Russell and Donna Ludwig, guild training coordinators, June Stubbs, accessions coordinator, Hugh Campbell, immediate past-president, Charles Taylor, Gibson Worsham, Ann Gardner Gray, and Barbara Schmidt, directors at large.

New members were elected in April to the board of directors for the Fine Arts Center for the New River Valley. They are Evelyn Aust, Pulaski, Nancy Ballenger, Pulaski, Debbie Douthat, Dublin, and Mary Wright, Pulaski. Other members are Ann Bolt, Steve Burcham, Gerry Fain, Aileen Fletcher, Jane Fuller, Dru Henderson, Edna Love, Carolyn McGuire, Beth Nelson, Gen Nuckols, Ruth Nuckols, Posey Payne, Barbara Powers, Betty Sadler and Elizabeth Bonham.

Joyce Beliveau of Blacksburg has been named the Director for the Child Abuse Prevention Coalition (CAPCo) of Montgomery County and Radford, an organization dedicated to education and advocacy for the prevention of child abuse and neglect.

Two Floyd High School seniors, William Slusher and Christopher Haney were awarded the rank of Eagle Scout in April. Slusher, a senior led scouts in the construction of playgrounds at the Laurel Branch Church of the Brethern and at the Floyd Recreational Park.

Haney received the Vigil Honor, highest honor of the Order of the Arrow in September of 1995, and will attend Virginia Military Institute in the fall.

Kristi Pomo, of Radford, was selected by The Long Way Home to direct the 1996 season. Pomo teaches in Radford University's music department and has directed several musical productions at RU.

The Lyric Council elected the 1996 board. Officers were John Kline, Chris Kappas, Barbara Pack, Janice Sherman, Steve Beatty, Lindsay West, Nancyne Willoughby, Arlene Saari, Jim Dymock, Michael Hedgepeth, Mark Smith, and Connie Snell.
