Library to celebrate 75th anniversary

The Roanoke Public Library will observe its 75th anniversary this year with a series of monthly events at all of the library's branches.

The opening program will be May 19 at the Main Library in Elmwood Park. There will be an open house from 2 to 4 p.m., with remarks by library officials and patrons at 2:30.

The anniversary program is being headed by Emily Keyser, who served as a city library official for 28 years until she retired in January.

Keyser said the library will have exhibits of memorabilia from its early days and from some of its special collections.

Former employees and longtime library patrons will have a reunion, Keyser said, in keeping with the "Patron Appreciation" theme of the observance.

There will be programs for children, including face painting; balloon tying by the Red Cross Youth Clown Corps; ventriloquist Tammy Barnwell and her friend Willie Webster; juggler David Bear Stuart; and Kathy Carter from the Blue Ridge Storytellers Association.
