Vinton Town Council members have received from the town manager a preliminary 1996-97 fiscal budget of nearly $5.9 million, which is slightly less than the budget for the current fiscal year.
Council will hold a public hearing on the budget at its next meeting, May 21 at 7 p.m. in the Vinton Municipal Building.
The budget will come up for final action by council June 4 or 18.
The proposed budget is about $250,000 less than the current budget, Town Manager Clay Goodman said. One reason for the decrease, he said, is that about $150,000 was eliminated from the capital improvements program.
He said that the current fiscal budget was higher than normal because it includes funds for several unfinished capital improvements from the 1994-95 fiscal year.
Town Council's meeting this week was unusual in one respect. It was the annual Student Government Day, in which about 31 government students from William Byrd High School spent part of the day with Vinton government officials getting hands-on experience about their jobs.
In a short speech, Mayor Charles Hill urged the students to exercise their right to vote and to become involved in government and community affairs wherever they settle.
Members of council echoed the mayor's comments and also urged the students to stay involved in the community throughout their lives.
