A Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court judge found two ninth-grade boys guilty Wednesday of manufacturing, possessing or using an explosive device in connection with a March incident where a boys' locker room toilet was blown apart.
Commonwealth's Attorney Gino Williams said the bomb was made out of a carbon dioxide cartridge, gunpowder and a wet-dry fuse. It was detonated during school on March 5. The explosion demolished a toilet and scattered porcelain shards around the area.
Other boys were in the locker room changing clothes, but no one was injured.
In a closed-door meeting March 18, the Floyd County School Board expelled the boys for 365 days. Superintendent Terry Arbogast described the boys at the time as "very apologetic."
The expulsion had a clause allowing the boys to re-petition the board in July. At that time the board could decide to allow the boys to return to school in the fall or continue the expulsion.
Williams said the sentence for the boys' criminal conviction - which is a felony - will be determined June 26 after the judge reviews the pre-sentencing report.
