Northside's Donald Shovely won the 100- and 200-meter dashes to help the Vikings capture the boys' team title at the Blue Ridge District track and field tournament on Wednesday.

Shovely won the 100 in a time of 11.61 seconds and the 200 in 23.86 seconds as Northside finished with 173 points. Salem was second with 123 points.

Daryl Holmes (long jump), Jeremy Crawford (triple jump), Stuart Bray (1,600 meters) and Chris Massey (400) were the other individual winners for the Vikings. (Complete scores in Scoreboard. B4)

Salem squeaked past Lord Botetourt 126-125 to capture the girls' team title despite winning only one individual event (Ashley Bush, 300 hurdles) and the 1,600 and 400 relays.

Takisha Basham and Sara Moore of Lord Botetourt each won two events. Basham won both the shot put and the discus events, and Moore captured the 800 and 1,600. Emily Hollett of Northside also won two events, the high jump and triple jump.

Carter, an Eagles' assistant coach the past three years, follows Harry Johnson, who announced before this past season that he was retiring after 17 years.

The GW job is considered one of the best in the state. Carter had been the favorite, but in the last month, Laurel Park's Frank Scott had moved in as a finalist. Carter got the nod from a committee that included students, faculty members and other coaches from GW.

Johnson closed out his career in story-book fashion as the Eagles won their first boys' Group AAA championship.

Carter, who has been an assistant at several other schools, also coached girls' basketball for two years at GW before becoming as Johnson's assistant.
