Harris Teeter to sell 6 stores
Harris Teeter Inc. said Wednesday it will sell six of its grocery stores, including its West Main Street location in Salem, to Harden Foods Inc., a newly formed company based in Altavista. The stores will operate under the Fresh 'N Friendly name and will emphasize customer service and fresh produce.
The transaction, which will be completed within the next 45 days, includes the sale of fixtures, equipment and inventory. Terms of the sale were not disclosed.
Russ Harden, president and chief executive of Harden Foods, said he plans to offer jobs to current Harris Teeter employees at all six locations.
The six stores that are being sold to Harden did not fit into Harris Teeter's long-term goals, said Harris Teeter President Ned Dunn. In addition to the Salem location, Harden also bought Harris Teeter stores in Reidsville, N.C., and in Altavista, Amherst, South Boston and South Hill.
