Locust Grove United Methodist Church of Salem is equipping a household kit for a needy family in war-torn Liberia. The kit, one of many being prepared by United Methodists, will contain cooking and eating utensils, bedding and a blanket. It will be sent this month.

Seeds for Croatia and Mozambique have been sent from many Southern Baptist congregations in the Roanoke Valley, with some providing more than 500 packets and funds for mailing to denominational mission workers in the European and African countries.

Southview United Methodist Church raised enough money in a Lenten project to distribute 48,000 pounds of potatoes. The offering, part of the Society of St. Andrew's Potato Project, will help feed the hungry in food pantries.

Two Roanoke churches, St. John's Episcopal and Deliverance Ministries, will send 10 people to the African village of Binaba in Ghana on July 1 to assist with the ministries of an Anglican congregation there. The Episcopal parish has worked with the African church previously; this will be the first trip for four Deliverance members.

Calvary United Methodist Church of Salem is collecting teddy bears up to 10 inches high for the Salem Police Department to distribute to children involved in a crisis. The toys have been found to give comfort to injured youngsters or those who have lost loved ones. |CHURCH PEOPLE|| The Rev. George Chioros has succeeded the Rev. Nicholas Bacalis as pastor of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. Chioros, 31, is a native of Chicago who took his theological education at Holy Cross Seminary in Brookline, Mass. He was transferred to the Roanoke parish followed the promotion of Bacalis to dean of Sts. Constantine and Helen Cathedral in Richmond. The new pastor has served congregations in Chicago and in Lanham, Md. His wife, Flora Despotides Chioros, is a landscape architect. The couple has a son, Constantine, 2.

The Rev. J. Landon Maddex has marked 52 years as an ordained Southern Baptist. His post-retirement ministry as director of Southern Baptist nursing home visitation continued for 16 years.

The Rev. Richard Hutcheson has become interim pastor of Second Presbyterian Church in Roanoke following the retirement of the Rev. William R. Klein. He and his wife, Ann Rivers Hutcheson, came here from the Northern Virginia community of Vienna. |MUSICAL EVENTS| A hymn festival featuring the choirs of South Roanoke and Raleigh Court United Methodist churches and First and Salem Presbyterian churches is scheduled May 19 at 4 p.m. at First Presbyterian, South Jefferson Street at McClanahan Street. Robert Chapman will be the director, with Joseph Kennedy at the organ. The concert is free.

Sally Goff will perform Friday at 10 a.m. in an organ recital at Second Presbyterian Church, 214 Mountain Ave. S.W. It will feature the music of living American women composers, and honors the Roanoke Valley Music Teachers Association.

Christ Episcopal Church, 1101 Franklin Road S.W., presents its fifth annual sacred music concert on May 19 at 5 p.m. The church choir will be joined by the Garth Newel Chamber Players for works by Bach, Handel and Byrd. It is free.

Penn Forest Church of God, 4429 Buck Mountain Road, has scheduled a Southern gospel concert Sunday at 7 p.m. featuring Charles Johnson and the Revivers. Johnson has presented black gospel works for 23 years. An offering will be taken.

Mother's Day music will be sung Sunday at 10 and 11 a.m. at Fellowship Baptist Church, 929 Murray Ave. S.E. It will be led by evangelists Allen and Angie Harris, who are gospel musicians.

At Central Baptist Church, 1502 Staunton Ave. N.W., two Baptist ministers, the Rev. Dwight O. Steele and the Rev. J. Eugene Young, will present a benefit program on May 19 at 7 p.m. |BUILDING CHANGES| A renovation project, which will include installation of stained glass windows and air conditioning, has been approved by the administrative council of Locust Grove United Methodist Church of Salem. Custom Originals in Stained Glass, a Salem crafts firm, will install the windows. |SPECIAL EVENTS| First Church of the Brethren is observing Lafiya themes in May. The word is of African derivation and means wellness and wholeness. The congregation is one of several in the denomination that attempts to integrate physical and spiritual health. Healthy families will be the theme Sunday, with health promotion emphasized on May 19, and recognition of deceased members on May 26.

St. Paul United Methodist Church, 502 Fifth St. N.W., will honor three mothers at 11 a.m. Sunday. Flordy G. Graves, Willie Mae Dillard and Katherin Anderson Elam represent leadership in the congregation covering a total of more than 100 years. Both Graves and Dillard also have marriages lasting more than 50 years.

Glad Tidings Assembly of God, 7422 Deer Branch Road, Hollins, plans a prayer seminar and revival meeting beginning tonight with the Rev. John Anderson the leader. The prayer seminar begins at 7 and continues on Friday night. Revival services will be held on Sunday at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. and through Wednesday at 7 p.m. Call 563-5151 for more information.

Woodlawn United Methodist Church, 2922 Corbieshaw Road S.W., has scheduled guest preachers throughout the summer in observance of its 50th anniversary. Bishop Thomas Stockton, retiring spiritual leader of the Virginia Conference, will be the guest on June 9. Former pastors Henry Amidon, William Mayton and George Freeman will be guests on July 14, Aug. 18 and Sept. 15 respectively.

The Catholic Historical Society, which maintains a museum at 624 N. Jefferson St., will open its displays and the gift shop for religious articles on three Sundays for the remainder of the year. The dates are June 2, Nov. 11 and Dec. 8. Proceeds from the gift shop will be used to build a new museum with a chapel and religious goods store.

Jerusalem Baptist Church, 1014 Norfolk Ave. S.W., will observe Mother's Day Sunday at the 10:45 a.m. service. A mother of nine, Jeroline Lewis, will be honored as Mother of the Year.

Life Tabernacle, a Pentecostal congregation worshiping at 801 E. Virginia Ave. in Vinton, will sponsor a community picnic May 19 from 2 to 5 p.m. in Fallon Park. Free refreshments and music will be provided. Bring blankets or chairs.
