AARON M. LEE, son of William and Dana Lee of Roanoke, has returned from a Youth Leadership Conference at Freedoms Foundation in Valley Forge, Pa.
Lee was sponsored by the Roanoke Chapter, Military Order of the World Wars.
ERICA LAUREN ALBERT, daughter of JoSu Albert and Warren and Kim Albert of Roanoke, has been selected to represent William Fleming High School at the Hugh O'Brian Leadership Seminar at Old Dominion University.
Albert is a member of the Student Government Association, a junior varsity cheerleader and a national award winner in the U.S. Achievements Academy for mathematics and foreign language.
Albert is sponsored by the Rokeva Woman's Club.
ROANOKE CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS has announced the winners of the State Future Business Leaders of America competition held in Reston. They are:
Jolina Goad, Mini Edwards, Derek Cunningham, Community Service Project, Patrick Henry High School, first place; Daniel Daum, Mr. Future Business Leader, Patrick Henry, second place; Partnership with Business Report, William Fleming High School, second place; Jeremy Barnes, Computer Applications, William Fleming, third place.
ROANOKE CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS announced the student who received certificates of recognition in the 1995-96 Johns Hopkins University Talent search.
Those recognized on both district and state levels for verbal scores are: Guinevera Jordan, Addison Challenge Program; Elizabeth Brogan, James Madison Middle School; Tyler Field, Woodrow Wilson Middle School; Gary Gregory, Woodrow Wilson Middle School and Marisa Lyman, William Ruffner Magnet Middle School.
Those receiving both district and state recognition in mathematics are: Trey Boone, Madison Middle School; Sonya Lepper, Madison Middle School; and Gregory Binnings, Woodrow Wilson.
Rebecca Rathburn of Madison Middle School, received a district recognition certificate for her verbal score. John Anderson, also of Madison Middle School, received district and state recognition for both verbal and mathematics scores.
SUSAN WENK was named the 1996 Roanoke Jaycees Outstanding Young Educator. Wenk is a social studies teacher and Student Government Association sponsor at William Fleming High School.
ALISON DENISE PRICE, daughter of Vernon and Vickie Price of Roanoke County, was named a United States National Award winner in foreign language. She attends Glenvar High School and will appear in the United States Achievement Academy Official Yearbook, which recognizes less than 10 percent of all American high school students.
WAYNE SPARROW and TAMARA AYERS of William Byrd High School have been selected to attend a foreign language academy this summer. Sparrow was selected to attend the Governor's German Academy, a complete immersion academy for the top six students. Ayers will attend the Russian Studies Academy at James Madison University for 45 students who are outstanding students in a language other than Russian.
THE ROANOKE CITY STRINGS received an award of excellence at a district band festival at E.C. Glass High School. The group, which includes students from Patrick Henry and William Fleming high schools, has received superior or excellent marks for its district festival performances five times since 1992. William Kinzie is the strings instructor for the group.
ALICIA ROSE COOK, an eighth grader at James Madison Middle School, won the American History Essay Contest sponsored by the Margaret Lynn Lewis Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The subject was "Explorers of America," and Cook wrote about Hernando de Soto. She is the daughter of Claire Born and John Scott of Roanoke.
PATRICK HENRY AND WILLIAM FLEMING HIGH SCHOOLS will send seven students to the Summer Governor's School for the Gifted, a college-based program for a select group of academically gifted rising juniors and seniors from all over the state. The students selected from Patrick Henry are: Amy Alls for theater, Tracy D'Souza for humanities, Jennifer Rogers for humanities and Jessica Surace for dance. Students selected from William Fleming are: Jeremy Baldwin for humanities, Claire Good for theater and Callie Robertson for humanities.
