Cincinnati convention

Ordained and lay people attending the Church of the Brethren national Annual Conference in Cincinnati, Ohio, July 2 through 7 will consider four documents approved by the General Board of the denomination. The papers will be recommended for action or for further study over the next year. Subjects are child exploitation, decisions for the end of life, nonviolence and humanitarian intervention and a revised study curriculum. In addition, a statement on the future of Jerusalem seeking a fair solution for both Israelis and Palestinians will be considered. The Church of the Brethren is one of the historic Christian peace denominations with many congregations in the Virlina District of Southern Virginia and North Carolina.

World hunger walk June 2

A world hunger walk supported by many Franklin County congregations will be in progress June 2 beginning and ending at Antioch Church of the Brethren west of Boones Mill. It will begin at 3 p.m. and will cover six miles. Call 483-2087 for information.

Pow wow at Bear Mountain

The purchase of land at Bear Mountain in Amherst County, regarded as sacred by Monacan Indians there, is a goal of a pow wow June 1 and 2. Sponsored by the Monacan Indian Nation, a tribal group living in the Lynchburg area, the festival of Indian crafts, dances, music and religious events will be at the Sedalia Center in Bedford County. The tribe, which last year received some of the sacred land from the Episcopal Diocese of Southwestern Virginia, is developing a museum near St. Paul's Church at Bear Mountain. Hours for the festival will be Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Call George Whitewolf at (804) 929-6911 for information.

Thaxton Baptist Church anniversary

Thaxton Baptist Church in Bedford County will observe its 140th Anniversary of founding May 19. Guest will be Fred Anderson of Richmond, Virginia Southern Baptist historian, who will portray an early church leader in events starting at 10:30 a.m. Potluck lunch follows with music in the afternoon. Child care will be provided. The church is on U.S. 460 west of Bedford.

Diocese opening tribunal for region

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Richmond will open a Western Virginia office of the Diocesan Tribunal on June 1. Roberta Small, a canon lawyer and Christian educator, will be its director. The office will be at Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church on Virginia 419 in Roanoke. The tribunal is a church court that receives petitions of persons who wish to establish freedom to remarry in the church following a divorce. Small will interview couples from diocesan Regions 8, 9, 10 and 11. Call 774-0066 for information.

Physician-clergy dialogue May 21

The final physician-clergy dialogue of the season is scheduled May 21 at Community Hospital of the Roanoke Valley. It will be from 7 to 8 a.m. as part of a complimentary breakfast. Topic is "When Is a Person Well?" Leaders will be Dr. Hayden Hollingsworth and the Rev. Nelson Harris. The programs are jointly sponsored for Western Virginia medical and religion professionals by the Roanoke Academy of Medicine and the Roanoke Valley Ministers Conference and are free.
