BLUE RIBBONS TO MARK LAW OFFICER SUPPORT

Navy blue ribbons will fly from vehicles next week to honor law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.

Sunday through May 18 is National Police Week - a time organizers ask the community to offer support to police agencies.

A Christiansburg police news release said members of the Police Department and their families, as well as the family of slain officer Terry Griffith, will attend national ceremonies in Washington, D.C., next week.

Griffith was shot and killed while trying to apprehend a shoplifter in September 1994. Montgomery County sheriff's deputies later killed the man responsible for Griffith's death.

Citizens may join the group in remembrance by tying a ribbon on their vehicle's antennas. Ribbons are available at the following Christiansburg businesses: Wal-Mart Supercenter, Hill's Department Store, Shepherd's Auto Supply Inc. and New River Valley Mall's customer service department.
