W&L LOSES IN TENNIS FINAL

Washington and Lee came up short Friday in its bid for the program's first title at the NCAA Division III women's tennis championships in Kalamazoo, Mich.

The Generals' No.1 doubles team of Natalia Garcia and Julie Ayers won 8-6, but W&L (19-1) fell 5-1 to Emory (Ga.) in the final. It was the first title for Emory (20-3).

``I'm happy with the way we played,'' said Cinda Rankin, the Generals' coach. ``We just hit a better team today that played better than we did.''

Individual competition begins today with W&L's Garcia seeded fourth in singles and Ericka Shapard unseeded in the 32-player field. Ayers and Garcia are seeded second in the 16-team doubles field.
