BASEBALL

DOUG KENNEY, Cave Spring

Kenney went 3-for-4 and drove in four runs while pitching five strong innings with six strikeouts in a 12-7 Roanoke Valley District victory over Pulaski County.

JASON CLARK, William Fleming

Clark cracked a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth, giving the Colonels an 8-7 victory over crosstown rival Patrick Henry.

REED SHABMAN, Blacksburg

Shabman pitched a three-hitter while striking out 11 in a 3-1 victory over Christiansburg. He also drove in the second run that proved to be the game winner. Shabman allowed just three singles and he has given up only one earned run in his past 21 innings while striking out 21 over that stretch.

MATT MC GUIRE, William Byrd

Only a freshman, third baseman McGuire homered on the first pitch in the bottom of the seventh to give the Terriers a 2-1 victory over Salem as they clinched the Blue Ridge District regular-season championship.

DE WAYNE YOPP, Shawsville

Yopp, a catcher, drove in four runs in the Shawnees' 8-3 victory over Floyd County. He has 30 RBI in only 46 at-bats while hitting .435.

SCOTT MARKHAM, Liberty

Markham allowed just one earned run in each game as he pitched the Minutemen to key 4-2 victories over Nelson County and Staunton River.

SHANNON JOHNSON, Alleghany

Johnson, a freshman, fired a no-hitter as Alleghany beat Rockbridge County 17-0 in five innings. Johnson walked five, hit two batters and struck out seven.

SOCCER

ANDY NEWTON, CHRIS HEWITT, Cave Spring

Newton scored two goals and Hewitt had two assists as Cave Spring beat William Fleming 10-0 for the Knights' 18th consecutive Roanoke Valley District victory. Newton has averaged two goals and Hewitt 1.5 assists per district game.

JOE FAVERO, ADAM WRIGHT, Fieldale-Collinsville

Favero and Wright each scored five goals as the Cavaliers took two Piedmont District victories over Bassett, 7-1, and Laurel Park, 5-1. Wright also added an assist.

SOFTBALL

KARI WHITNEY, KERRY FAIR, Cave Spring

These two did a number on two of the Blue Ridge District's best teams. Whitney slammed out five hits in nine trips including two homers to drive in eight runs as the Knights walloped Alleghany 12-4 and William Byrd 11-1. Fair was the winning pitcher, giving up just one earned run and 12 hits.

NICOLE HARTER, North Cross

Harter singled home the winning run in the bottom of the seventh as the Raiders outlasted Virginia Episcopal 15-14 to win the Southern Division of the Blue Ridge Conference regular-season championship.

ERIN WEAVER, Northside

Weaver pitched three complete games for the Vikings while striking out 32. Weaver lost 1-0 to Lord Botetourt, the co-leader in the Blue Ridge District with William Byrd and Alleghany going into Friday's games, and 5-4 to Carroll County, one of Timesland's best hitting teams while beating Salem 8-6.

KATHLEEN MILLER, Roanoke Catholic

Miller pulled off a rare feat for a third baseman as she averaged making one putout per inning with seven in a 7-4 loss to Hargrave Military. Miller had three pop-ups in fair territory, two foul outs and an unassisted putout at the bag.

TENNIS

MICHELLE JOHNSTON, Giles

Johnston, a junior, has been unbeatable during the regular season. Playing No. 5 singles for the Spartans last year as a sophomore, she was 11-0. This week, she completed a 10-0 record at No. 3 singles, giving her a two-year regular season record of 21-0.

GLENVAR BOYS' TEAM

The Highlanders claimed their sixth consecutive Pioneer District title by beating Bath County 9-0. The Highlanders, defending Group A state champions, are led by senior Tommy Lesperance (9-1) and Josh Williamson (8-2) in singles and they team together in doubles.

TRACK

LEAHAN AGEE, Cave Spring

After suffering an injury in the high jump of the Cosmopolitan Invitational meet that knocked her out of the 800- and 1,600-meter runs, Agee is form again for the upcoming Roanoke Valley District meet. In a five-way meet with Pulaski County, William Fleming, Franklin County and the Russian touring team, Agee won the mile run (5:46.3), the 440-yard run (61.6) and the 880-yard run (2:32.3).
