1863 in Tazewell
TAZEWELL - Historic Crab Orchard Museum's annual spring festival will focus on the year 1863, when Tazewell County chose to remain part of Virginia during the Civil War instead of joining the newly formed state of West Virginia.
It will be held May 18 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $6 ($3 for children ages 6-12). Museum members will be admitted free.
The museum's original log and stone buildings in Pioneer Park will be used as the community of Pisgah, including a post office with commemorative envelopes and $2 hand-cancellations on stamps issued last year to recognize the war.
Confederate Army ``recruiters'' will be on hand urging able-bodied men and boys to join up for training and drills. The recruits will then be sent off by wives and girlfriends with songs and prayers.
Visitors will hear a lively debate among Tazewell Countians on whether to change states. Spectators will be encouraged to add their views including applause and boos.
Actual letters from Confederate soldiers to their loved ones in Tazewell County will be read. A soldier's funeral will be staged. Lunches and refreshments will be available for purchase.
The museum is located on U.S. 19-460, three miles west of Tazewell.
