RADFORD GAINS SPLIT IN FINALE

Radford closed out the 1996 college baseball season Saturday by splitting a doubleheader with Big South Conference champion Charleston Southern in Radford.

The Highlanders (20-30 overall, 9-12 conference) blew a lead in game one and lost 9-5 in nine innings. Radford won game two 7-3.

Kelly Dampeer (Northside) hit two doubles in the twinbill, the 47th and 48th of his career, had two RBI and scored one run. Dampeer had two hits in the game one loss.

Eric Harris won game two with a five-hit, complete game, improving his record to 6-2 for the year and 18-6 for his career.

In other baseball:

* Virginia Tech's Atlantic 10 tournament game with Massachusetts was rained out in the top of the first inning in Boyertown, Pa. The game will be resumed today at 1:05 p.m.

TENNIS Harvard ousts Tech men

The Virginia Tech's men's tennis team saw its season end with a 5-1 first-round loss to Harvard in the NCAA Region I championships in Cambridge, Mass.

Oliver Mayo was Tech's lone winner as he defeated Harvard's No.1 seed, Tom Blake 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). Aaron Marchetti lost in a third-set tiebreaker to Todd Meringoff 6-1, 5-7, 7-6 (8-6) at No.2.

* Washington and Lee's doubles tennis team of Natalia Garcia and Julie Ayers, ranked No. 1 in the nation, lost in the first round of the NCAA Division III women's tournament. Garcia and Ayers fell 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 to Tegan Tindall and Lori Manheimmer of Kenyon College in Kalamazoo, Mich.

In the singles competition, Garcia advanced to the quarterfinals with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 win over Kathleen Moynihan of Nazareth College and a 6-1, 6-1 win over Ali St.Vincent of Kenyon College.

Washington and Lee's other singles participant, Ericka Shapard, lost in the first round to Claire Turchi of Pomona-Pitzer 6-0, 6-1 but stayed alive for the consolation championship by beating Eve Henderson of Kalamazoo 2-6, 6-0, 6-1.

* Roanoke Valley Christian won its third consecutive Virginia Independent Conference boys' tennis title with a 6-3 victory over Lynchburg Christian Academy at Waldrond Park.

The Eagles reached the championship game with a 6-3 win over Covenant. LCA defeated Eastern Mennonite in the semifinals 5-4.

* At Ridgeway, Martinsville beat Fieldale-Collinsville 5-1 to win the Piedmont District boys' team tennis championship.

In singles, Martinsville's Brian Biga defeated the Cavaliers' Amit Patel 6-2, 6-2 for the title. Pastel and Brad Herman of Fieldale-Collinsville stopped Biga and Mark Gravely of Martinsville 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 for the doubles championship.

ETC. UVa women reach final four

Virginia defeated William and Mary 8-6 to advance to the national semifinals in NCAA Division I women's lacrosse against Loyola College next weekend at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa.

Virginia (13-3) was led by Heather Patton, Kate Evans and Heather Hotchkiss who scored two goals each. Dani Vissers of William and Mary (10-7) scored three goals.

* The Roanoke Riverdawgs dropped to 1-1 with a 6-0 loss to the Carolina Dynamo in High Point, N.C.

The game was called at the 4:24 mark of the second half because of lightning. The Riverdawgs will play host to the Momentum 2000 All-Stars at 7:30 p.m. on May 18.

* The Roanoke Star Under-13 White Team defeated the New River Strikers 1-0 in a State Cup quarterfinal game at Green Hill Park in Salem.

John Hartman scored the lone goal, and goalie Charley Patterson preserved the shutout by stopping a direct kick late in the game. The win advances the Roanoke Star to the Virginia Youth Soccer Association State Cup Final Four in Richmond on June 1-2.

* Giles High School blew away the field to win the boys' and girls' team titles in the Three Rivers District track championships on Friday at Radford High School.

Floyd County's 113 points beat out Radford's 100 points for second place in the boys' competition. Auburn with 30 points and Shawsville with 13 rounded out the scoring. Kevin Slusser of Giles took first in the 110-meter high hurdles and 300-meter intermediate hurdles.

In the girls' competition, Megan Noble won the triple jump, 100-meter high hurdles, 300-meter low hurdles and the long jump to lead Giles to victory. Giles finished with 156 points, Radford was second at 123, followed by Floyd County (102), Auburn (50) and Shawsville (24).

* Joey Taylor was 3-for-5 with three RBI and three stolen bases to lead Hargrave over North Cross 8-7 in nine innings in a Virginia Independent Conference semifinal game at Maher Field.

North Cross led 7-5 going into the ninth, but Hargrave scored three runs. The winning run came in with a bases-loaded walk.

Taylor also picked up the pitching victory with four innings of relief work.

David Krell led the Raiders, going 3-for-5 with five RBI and four steals.

The second game, matching Covenant and Lynchburg Christian Academy, was suspended in the top of the sixth with Covenant leading 6-4. The game will be finished Monday at 3 p.m. at Liberty University. Hargrave will take on the winner in the championship game immediately following the Covenant-LCA game.
