Arts Council grants
The Arts Council of the Blue Ridge is offering scholarships to students in the Roanoke region who would like to begin or expand their experience in the visual, performing or literary arts.
Students in grades nine through 12 who without assistance would be unable to purchase art supplies, attend symphony concerts, theater performances or an arts-related camp, take workshops, master classes, art classes or music lessons are encouraged to apply.
One thousand dollars in grants will be awarded based on interest, dedication and need. Applications may be obtained at high schools or by contacting the Arts Council at 342-5790.
Applications must be postmarked by June 1, and experiences must take place before June 30. The grants will be awarded in August.
Theater auditions
Auditions for Playmakers Playhouse's production of ``You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown'' will he held Saturday from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at the playhouse, University Mall, Blacksburg.
Parts are available for pupils in grades one through eight. Auditionees should bring a prepared song with sheet music. A pianist will be available.

Roanoke City Art Show
The Arts Council of the Blue Ridge has announced that the 17th annual 1996 Roanoke City Art Show will be held July 19 to Sept. 29.
The exhibit will be displayed in the first floor gallery of the Art Museum of Western Virginia, Center in the Square, downtown Roanoke.
This annual juried exhibit is open to artists from the Blue Ridge Mountains who are at least 18 years old. Deadline for artists to enter slides is 3 p.m., May 31.
$1,600 in cash prizes will be awarded.

Pedal the Piedmont
The ``Pedal the Piedmont'' MS 150 Bike Tour will be held June 8 and 9, beginning in Charlottesville and ending at Stonewall Vineyard, Concord.
Cyclists will travel 75 miles to Farmville and stay overnight at Longwood College. Food and entertainment will be provided.
Cyclists obtain pledges from those wishing to help raise funds for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Singles group
Perspectives is a social and discussion group being formed for single, divorced, separated and widowed men and women.
Meetings will be held on the third Thursday of each month in the Fellowship Hall of Main Street United Methodist Church, 212 Main St., Bedford. The next meeting is scheduled for this Thursday.
Registration begins at 6:45 p.m. Group discussion begins at 7:30 p.m., followed by a social hour from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. No church affiliation is required.
There is a $2 charge per meeting. Refreshments will be provided.

Theater internships
Ferrum College's Theatre and Dramatic Arts Department invites high school students, high school graduates and first-year college students to become interns and apprentices with the Blue Ridge Dinner Theatre Company.
Interns and apprentices audition for roles in major productions, participate in workshops, interact with the public as performers and representatives of the B.R.D.T. and help teach younger people who are enrolled in workshops and who are cast members.
Internships run from June 16 to July 27 and include room, board and three hours of college credit. Apprenticeships run from either June 16 to July 6 or from July 7 to July 27. College credit may be available.
The B.R.D.T. produces five main stage productions, several studio productions and has two touring companies.

Field trip to Lexington
The Southwest Virginia Genealogical Society will have a field trip Saturday to Washington and Lee University's Special Collections Library, Lexington.
Meet at Oakland Baptist Church off Williamson Road, Roanoke, at 7:45 a.m. The group will visit the library from 9 a.m. to noon. Lunch will be at a local restaurant.
Attendees may tour historic Lexington in lieu of the library.
