STUDENT ART GOES ELECTRONIC

Several art students at Christiansburg High School have had the opportunity to have their work displayed at local art shows and competitions. Art work by Helen Smartt, Chandra Overstreet and Emily Quesenberry was chosen to be included at the Ferrum College's Up and Coming High School Juried Art Competition. Quesenberry's sculpture "Enter Expression" was honored with a Judge's Choice award at the competition. Smartt's entry was a pastel watercolor titled "Think Globally, Act Locally." Overstreet had two entries, a graphite sketch of Kurt Cobain and a watercolor titled "Vampire on 66th St."

Several students' work also has been selected to appear at the Roanoke Arts Commission High School Art Exhibition. The following students will have their work displayed: Smartt, Overstreet, Cindy Fenton, Carrie Gwinn and Lindsay Yearick.

In addition, art students at Christiansburg High have an on-line art gallery on the World Wide Web. Over the past several months, art teachers Pam Taylor and Jean Wonderley helped students display their work in cyberspace. Artwork displayed at the web site includes "The Time is Now," an immense clock built by several students in the sculpture and ceramics class to "voice the concern that the landfills are edging closer and closer to our own personal space," the page explains. Three-quarters of the piece is made out of biodegradable trash, and the final section out of water-degradable Styrofoam to show the small amount of land left on Earth.

Another work is "It's a Balancing Act," a pastel sketch of a football player doubling over under the weight of a gigantic book. The artist, senior Lyle Gardner, explained that when he created that piece, "I was struggling to get by in algebra, and I knew if I didn't make a good grade, I wouldn't get to play football" - a dream of his since the eighth grade.

The site includes art work and writings by students. It can be found at http://www.bev.net/education/schools/chs/art.
