Virginia Tech, which opens the 1996-97 men's basketball season in the Big Island Invitational, will meet host Hawaii Hilo in the first game at 7:45 p.m. Hawaiian time.
The winner and loser of the Tech-Hawaii Hilo game will play the winner and loser, respectively, of the first-round game between Auburn and Colorado. Other teams in an eight-team field are Louisville, Montana State, Illinois and Texas Christian.
Hawaii Hilo, a Division II program, will be playing on its home floor at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium in Hilo. -Staff report
