BENNETT, Terry Nelson, 75, of Rocky Mount, died Monday, May 13, 1996, at the VA Medical Center, Salem. A son of the late James Cyrus and Lula Thurman Bennett, he was also preceded in death by a son, Richard Bennett; three sisters; and four brothers. Mr. Bennett was a veteran of World War II, and was Past Governor of Rocky Mount Moose Lodge #1053. Surviving are his wife, Kathryn Boone Bennett of the home; his daughter, Kaye C. Bennett, Riverside, Calif.; his son, T. Carmon Bennett, Rocky Mount; his grandchildren, Jay Bennett and Stephanie Bennett; two sisters, Louise Divers, Rocky Mount, Alice Poindexter, Martinsville; three sisters-in-law, Lavon D. Bennett, Helen D. Bennett, Lorraine M. Bennett, all of Rocky Mount; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday from Redwood United Methodist Church with Rev. Charles Comer officiating. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers the family has suggested memorials be made to the Parking Lot Fund of Redwood United Methodist Church. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Tuesday, with the family receiving friends from 7 to 9 p.m. at Flora Funeral Service, 342 S. Main St., Rocky Mount.

DUNCAN, Alice Bolt, 76, of Willis, passed away Monday, May 13, 1996. Funeral 1 p.m. Thursday, Maberry Funeral Home Chapel, Floyd.

GILLEY, Maynard Hughes, 69, of 1406 Spruce St., Martinsville, died Saturday, May 11, 1996, in Memorial Hospital, Martinsville-Henry County. He was born August 24, 1926 in the Critz section of Patrick County, son of the late Emmett Hughes Gilley and Carrie Martin Gilley. He retired in 1993 as Sheriff, City of Martinsville, having served three elected terms. He previously was a patrolman with the Martinsville City Police Department, attaining the rank of sergeant with 27 years service, 1954 to 1981. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. He was a graduate of Hardin Reynolds High School, Patrick County. He attended and graduated from the FBI Academy, Quantico, attended numerous other police schools and was certified by the Virginia Sheriff's Association. He was a long-time member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, where he served on the administrative board, was a member of the Men's Bible Class, the Methodist Men's Club, and was a church usher. He held membership in the Virginia Sheriff's Association, Pannill Post #42 of the American Legion, and was on the board of the Martinsville-Henry County Rescue Squad. He was predeceased by a son, Robert Hughes Gilley; and two brothers, Randolph Gilley and Stanley ``Pete'' Gilley. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Flowers Gilley of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Glenn (Patricia) Dennis of Collinsville, Mrs. Mark (Pamela) Barnard of Virginia Beach; son, Michael H. Gilley of Martinsville; two sisters, Mrs. Marshall (Hazel) Roop of Patrick Springs, Mrs. George (Polly) Roop of Critz; b rother. J. B. Gilley of Patrick Springs; five grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Harry Spears officiating. Interment will be in Critz Baptist Church Cemetery, Patrick County, with burial honors by the Martinsville City Police Honor Guard. Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice. GREENE, Lewis Henry Sr., 86, of Lexington, died Monday, May 13, 1996 at his home. Mr. Greene was born May 4, 1910 in Bowling Green, Va., a son of the late John Enzer Greene and Lucy Jane Crisp Greene. He was a member of the Manly Memorial Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Anna Lee Greene, Lexington; a daughter, Sylvia G. Moore, Street, Md.; a son, Lewis Greene, Jr., Crew; a brother, Lloyd Greene, Norg e; a sister, Shirley Scott, Richmond; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Graveside in the Stonewall Jackson Cemetery, officiated by Dr. Thomas G. Harvey. Please omit flowers. HARRIS, James Edward, 76, of Moneta, passed away Saturday, May 11, 1996. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and retired from the Appalachian Power Co. Mr. Harris was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Harris. Survivors include two sisters, Lois Jones and Mabel (William) Gaither, both of Roanoke; one niece, Jeanette Joyner, Portsmouth; stepson, Manuel (Alberta) Thomason, Moneta; other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Funeral services will be Wednesday, 2 p.m., at the Hamlar-Curtis Chapel. Rev. Rawleigh W. Quarles will officiate with the interment in the family cemetery in Moneta. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Hamlar-Curtis.

HENDRIX, Helen Phillips, 78, of Radford, passed away Sunday, May 12, 1996. She attended Grove United Methodist Church, and was the widow of Carl Taylor Hendrix. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Carla and Gary Lewis, Ellensburg, Wash.; son and daughter-in-law, Philip and Sal ly Hendrix, Radford; grandchildren, Kara Lewis and Heidi Cofran; sisters, Lucille Abbott, Salem, and Marion Wilson, Goode; brothers, Garland Phillips, Roanoke, Marshall Phillips and Morris Phillips, both of Lynchburg. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 15, 1996, at 11 a.m. at the Grove United Methodist Church with the Rev. Clarence Dishman officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunrise Burial Park in Radford. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Seaver-Sanders & Mullins Funeral Home in Radford. MILLER, James A., (``Carry''), of Pilot, passed away on Saturday, May 11, 1996. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday from the Christiansburg Pentecostal Holiness Church conducted by Rev. MONTCASTLE, Amy Arlene, 70, of Roanoke, died at home, Sunday, May 12, 1996, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Surviving are her husband, John Thomas Montcastle; her daughter, Debra Lea Montcastle, both of Roanoke; her sister, Marie Foley, Catawba; several nieces and nephews including Frank Arnold, Butch Foley, Stinky Foley. She will be sadly missed by her relatives and friends, especially by Dot and Cootie Adams. A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, 1996, at Old Dominion Memorial Gardens. POWELL, Earl, 88, of Roanoke, died Monday, May 13, 1996. He was formerly of New York City and worked in various capacities in the legal field and was associated with the Salvation Army's Street Ministries. He is survived by dear friends, Ruth Deaner Hicks, Nell Deaner, both of Roanoke, Warren Hicks, Huddleston; a special thanks to Larry and Diane Hanson for the excellent care that he received . REED, Eugene A. (``Sarge''), 82, of Radford, died Sunday, May 12, 1996 in a Radford hospital. He was the owner and operator of Reed's Auto Parts. He was a veteran of World War II, and was preceded in death by his sister, Mrs. Goldie Smith and a brother, Donald (``Mutt'') Reed. Surviving are a sister and brother-in-law, Mildred R. and S teven Kovach, Radford; two brothers and sisters-in-law, J. B. and Lorene Reed, Radford, Garnett and Martha Reed, Belspring; a brother-in-law, Sherman Smith, Long Shop; a sister-in-law, Louise Reed, Parrott; several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the DeVilbiss Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Dennis Martin officiating. Interment will follow in Sifford Cemetery in Parrott. SCHOWE, Benjamin Marshall Jr., 75, of Roanoke, died Sunday, May 12, 1996. He is survived by his wife, Billie Winn Schowe. He attended South Roanoke United Methodist Church. Born August 6, 1920, in Akron, Ohio, he was the son of Benjamin M. Schowe and Dorothy C. Schowe. He was educated at Galludet College in Washington, D.C., where he was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. He received his Master and Doctorate Degrees from Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. He began his teaching career at the Virginia School for the Deaf in Staunton. He was a teacher-librarian for many years at the Ohio School for the Deaf in Columbus. He was Chairman of the Language Department at the Model Secondary School for the Deaf in Washington, D.C., and an archivist at Galludet University. Dr. Schowe was active in his service to the deaf and hearing impaired community. He served on the Advisory Board for the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, as well as the Quality Assurance Service for interpreters of sign language. He taught sign language classes at Virginia Western Community College and the Roanoke Department of Parks and Recreation. He was active in the Piedmont Chapter of the Virginia Association of the Deaf and the Roanoke HANDS group. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Dorothy Narodny, her husband, Ivan; and his granddaughters, Mariya and Sonya of Bedford; and his son, Ben F. Schowe, his wife, Jean; and his granddaughter Mary, and grandson, Benjamin, of Forest. He was preceded in death by his wife, Laura Knight Schowe. A memorial service will be held at a later date. SOWERS, Clifford Ray, 79, of Cana, passed away Sunday, May 12, 1996. Funeral 11 a.m. Wednesday, Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel, Hillsville.

TRENT, Ethel H., (``Big Ethel Mae"") of Rochester, N.Y. formerly of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, May 7, 1996. She is survived by a beloved and devoted niece, Ann Huff-Hall of Rochester, N.Y.; cousin, James Poindexter of Palo Alto, Calif.; a host of nieces, great-nieces, great-nephews, other relativ es and friends. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 11, 1996 at 1 p.m. at Zion Hill Baptist Church, 250 Bronson Ave., Rochester, N.Y., with Pastor Samuel McCree officiating. Also, funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 14, 1996, 2 p.m. at the Hamlar-Curtis Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Kenneth B. Wright, with burial in Williams Memorial Park. TRINKLE, E. Lee Jr., 85, of Roanoke, died Sunday, May 12, 1996. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Trinkle, and a brother, James Lewis Trinkle. Mr. Trinkle attended Augusta Military Academy and Hampden Sydney College. He was a retired Vice President of General American Insurance Company of St. Louis, Mo. Surviving are a daught er and son-in -law, Sue Cosby and Arthur Schott, Roanoke; son and daughter-in-law, Lee and Catherine Trinkle, Birmingham, Ala.; sister and brother-in-law, Helen Sue and William Stroud; brother and sister-in-law, Billy and Virginia Trinkle, Roanoke; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; several nephews and one niece.
