ROANOKE REGIONAL ECONOMIC INDICATORS

The number of building permits rose slightly in April from a year earlier, but the total value of that construction fell 40.6 percent from $20 million to $12 million.

The permits issued in the Roanoke Valley localities last month included $1 million for remodeling the former Hechinger's store at Valley View Mall into a new supermarket and drug store, Rack and Sack. Roanoke also issued a permit for a dozen new single family homes.

Roanoke County issued permits for 53 single family homes worth a total of $3.3 million.
