Business basics

MARION - A 12-hour course in four sessions for aspiring entrepreneurs or the self-employed will be offered at the Smyth County Adult Education Center from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. May 21, 23, 29 and 30. The cost is $35.

The business basics course is offered by the BusinessStart of People Inc., a regional community action agency. It is designed to show participants various aspects of operating small businesses.

Individuals completing the course may be eligible to apply for start-up funds through a revolving loan fund administered by BusinessStart. Further information is available by calling 628-9188.

Pioneer skills

TAZEWELL - Young Southwest Virginians will have a chance this summer to emulate pioneers and learn skills used by the region's first settlers to survive and prosper.

The Summer Youth Apprentice Program is being offered by Historic Crab Orchard Museum and Pioneer Park for youngsters between the ages of eight and 14 years. It will be directed by Nancy Bane Peery, director of museum programs and a state-certified social studies teacher.

Participants will be taught pioneer skills from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 24, 25 and 26 such as basic wool processing, gardening and toy-making. Boys will also be taught basic blacksmithing and wood-working, and girls hand-sewing and open-hearth cooking.

Enrollment is limited to 40. Registration deadline is July 1. The cost, including materials and instructional literature, is $55 (or $45 for children of museum members). Registration information is available by calling 988-6755 or writing to Route 1, Box 194, Tazewell, Va. 24651.

Dance school reunion
