The Greater Blacksburg Chamber of Commerce presented the annual Small Business Person of the Year and Eugene Jones awards on Tuesday to Hokie Honda owner Paul Duncan and Herb Cork, Virginia Tech Business/Technology Center director, respectively.
Duncan, who was nominated by his staff, founded Hokie Honda in 1976 with six employees. The dealership now has 37 full-time employees and sales of more than $13 million in 1995, according to the nomination letter.
Duncan also has provided land and money for a beautification project on South Main Street and has been involved in activities within Blacksburg's public school system and Virginia Tech.
Cork, winner of the Eugene Jones award, retired during the late 1980s after a long career in business but returned to work in 1990 when he began directing the Small Business Institute at Virginia Tech. He also became involved in the Service Corps of Retired Executives, a volunteer business counseling organization.
In 1994, he became director of the Business/Technology Center at Tech, which provides business assistance to technically oriented companies. More recently, he also took on directorship of the Pamplin College of Business' management and professional development programs.
