HOME RUNS POWER AVALANCHE

SALEM HITS a season-high four long balls to whip Winston-Salem 11-6.

Four home runs powered the Salem Avalanche to an 11-6 victory Tuesday night over the Winston-Salem Warthogs in a Carolina League baseball game.

Will Scalzitti, Chad Gambill and Pookie Jones swatted solo homers and Chan Mayber launched a two-run shot as the Avalanche raked three Warthogs pitchers for 15 hits. (Box score in Baseball Scoreboard.)

Luther Hackman (4-2) was the beneficiary of Salem's offensive onslaught, overcoming seven walks to yield only three runs in six innings. He scattered three hits before giving way to Todd Genke in the seventh inning.

The Avalanche trailed 3-1 after Winston-Salem shortstop Amador Arias drilled a three-run double in the second inning. But Salem broke open the game with three runs in the fourth, two in the fifth, two in the seventh and two in the eighth to take an 11-3 lead.

Scalzitti and Jones had three hits apiece to pace Salem's offensive splurge, and Scalzitti drove in four runs.

Avalanche pitchers issued 10 walks, but left-hander Keith Barnes doused a Winston-Salem rally by striking out four of the six batters he faced in the eighth and ninth innings.

The Warthogs parlayed a walk, an error and three hits into three runs in the eighth before Barnes quelled the uprising with two strikeouts.

Winston-Salem starter Cedric Allen (5-2) surrendered seven runs in 41/3 innings. He gave up nine hits, including all of Salem's home runs except Mayber's shot.

The four home runs were a season high for the Avalanche, which leads the series with the Warthogs 3-1. In the past two games between the teams, Salem has pounded out 33 hits and scored 23 runs.
