MOM, SON CHARGED AFTER RAVE ORGANIZERS NEEDED PERMIT, POLICE SAY

Salem police have charged a mother and son with holding a rave illegally at the American Legion in Salem.

Two weeks ago, police closed down the all-night dance party and arrested a Raleigh, N.C., man for possession of cocaine and LSD with intent to distribute the drugs.

Police said Tuesday they charged Eric Jason Halprin, 23, of Salem and his mother, Linda K. Howard, 51, of Wirtz with two misdemeanor offenses - failure to obtain a dance hall permit and operating a public dance hall after 2 a.m.Neither has been served with the warrants.

Halprin and Howard were listed on an American Legion contract as organizers of the "D-Day" rave. It was advertised to be held May 4 at the former Winn-Dixie on West Main Street in Salem, but was moved by organizers to the American Legion because of apparent electrical hazards at the former grocery store.

On the contract, the event was listed as a graduation party for Radford University, Salem Police Chief James Bryant said.

"The only thing we're saying is if you're going to come to Salem and operate a business, we want it to be done in a business manner and in the proper way," Bryant said.

Police estimated 600 people, mostly under 25, attended. Admission cost $14, $12 with a flier. No alcohol was served.

At the rave, police arrested Eric Jonathan Wise, 21, of Raleigh for the two drug charges. Salem officers investigated the rave for more than four hours before arresting Wise and ordering the party to end about 4 a.m. They confiscated $1,350 from Wise and seized his car.
