Cardinal Criminal Justice Academy in Salem is able to teach computer training courses to local police thanks to the generosity of two local companies, General Electric and The Fourth R. The Elfund Society, which distributes surplus General Electric equipment, donated 10 computers to the academy. Ken Thompson, of The Fourth R, a computer education firm, is donating his instructional services.@

The new computer lab will help prepare law enforcement and jail personnel for the demands of increased computerization within their agencies.

Lincoln Terrace Saturn Network recently received $1,150 from Valley Beautiful Foundation Inc. for beautification of the school's grounds. Principal William Sinkler says the money will be used to purchase plants and trees. Students who are members of the Lincoln Terrace Garden Club and their faculty sponsors will supervise the planting and landscaping.

The Southwest Virginia Nursery and Landscape Association donated its time, tools and materials to beautify Mill Mountain Zoo. Approximately 25 companies donated plants, mulch and the use of equipment. About 40 landscapers spent a sunny Saturday in February planting more than 400 flowers, shrubs, grasses and trees on the zoo's grounds. Association president Jim Snyder recruited the volunteers and organized the project.
