"Logs & Pollywogs" is the name for a week of science exploration for youngsters being offered next month at New River Community College.
Activities for children in grades 2-5 will be offered from June 24 to June 28, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. for incoming second- and third-graders, and from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. for incoming fourth- and fifth-graders.
The five-day program covers the following topics:
"Ecology of the New River Valley," learning about connections of native life forms, mapping out the area, and discovering what kind of environments it has;
"Living on Land," providing studies of life in a tree, life on a log and life which requires magnifying lenses to observe;
"Life in Water" is a field trip to observe aquatic plants and animals and learn how we depend on underwater life for clean water supplies;
"Who Lives in that Water" checks out insects, fish and other forms of life brought back from the field trip;
"Presentation Day" will have the students making presentations on what they have learned to their parents.
Mike Rosenzweig, who has a doctorate in ecology, and geographer Dave Deshler are directors for the program, which is sponsored by New River Community College and SEEDS (Seek Education, Explore, DisCover), a nonprofit educational organization specializing in fun, cultural and environmental on-site activities, educational field trips and travel for all ages.
The cost is $55 for each participant. Registration must be complete by June 3. Registration forms and further information are available by calling Debbie Douthat in the community college's Division of Arts and Sciences at 674-3600, 921-4592, 382-4595 or 745-4595, extension 292.
