The Business Assistance Center at Radford University will offer a course in Pulaski on starting and managing a small business this summer.
Classes will meet at Community National Bank from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays from June 11 to Aug. 6. The cost, covering a book, handouts and refreshments, is $150.
Michael Tentnowski, the instructor, manages his own small business and has trained others in small-business management. He is a co-author of "The Virginia Entrepreneur's Guide," a textbook on starting a small business in Virginia.
Participants who complete the eight-week program will be able to apply for a loan from area banks or the New Enterprise Loan Fund started specifically for small businesses in the New River Valley.
The course will provide the introductory knowledge necessary to help anyone who has started, or is considering starting, a small business. It will cover ways to evaluate business ideas and basic marketing, management, finance and other business skills. Participants can get confidential one-on-one counseling from an expert in small business management, and assistance with obtaining financing.
"They're trying to gear it so that, when you get done with the class, your business plan's done," said Barry Matherly, economic development director for the town of Pulaski.
The course is among those offered at Radford's Business Assistance Center on Norwood Street in Radford. But, Matherly said, this will offer Pulaski County residents a chance to take it without having to travel to Radford for classes.
