Junior right-hander Seth Greisinger pitched a complete-game four-hitter and struck out 12 batters as Virginia defeated 19th-ranked North Carolina State 5-1 Tuesday in the second round of the Atlantic Coast Conference baseball tournament at Durham Athletic Park.
It was the seventh victory over a ranked opponent for Virginia, which is 37-18. UVa will meet top-seeded Florida State today at 1:30 p.m. The Seminoles knocked off Wake Forest 8-4 in another second-round matchup.
John Galloway led off the game with a home run for the Cavaliers, who had 11 hits off N.C. State ace Brett Black. Black is 12-2 while Greisinger is now 10-2, setting a school record for career strikeouts with 277 in the process.
``It wasn't my best day ever, but it was good enough to get the job done,'' said Greisinger, who struck out 13 batters March 9 in UVa's 12-1 victory over the Wolfpack in Raleigh.
Among Greisinger's victims was Wolfpack designated hitter Mandy Jacomino, one of seven N.C. State starting left-handed batters and the ACC's top hitter with a .423 average. Jacomino went 0-for-4 and struck out three times against Greisinger.
``Seth obviously threw very, very well for us,'' Virginia coach Dennis Womack said.
With N.C. State down 3-1 in the eighth inning, Symmion Willis slammed a two-run homer off a Black change-up to seal the win.
Galloway went 2-for-3 at the plate, while catcher Justin Counts and shortstop Adam Robinson each went 2-for-4.
