LYNCHBURG WILL BE HOME TO BIG SOUTH

The Big South Conference has awarded its men's and women's basketball tournaments for 1997 and 1998 to Liberty University's Vines Center in Lynchburg.

The first-ever combined event will be the first weekend in March and will be played over four days. Dates and times have not been announced.

Liberty played host to the 1995 and 1996 men's tournaments. The women's tournament has been played at Radford University's Dedmon Center for the past two years.

In other sports in the region:

nMagna Vista and Martinsville advanced to the final of the Piedmont District boys' soccer tournament with victories Wednesday night in Martinsville.

In the first game, John Tunnell's unassisted goal in the 56th minute was all Magna Vista needed to beat Fieldale-Collinsville. In the nightcap, Wes Lewis and Ben Smith scored three goals apiece and Smith added an assist as Martinsville mauled Laurel Park 9-2.

The championship game is 7 p.m. Friday at Martinsville High School.

* Miguel Castro of William Byrd knocked off Lord Botetourt's Jamey Gilliland 6-2, 6-1 to win the singles title and the Terriers defeated Northside 5-0 to win the team championship in the rain-shortened Blue Ridge District boys' tennis tournament at Virginia Tech.

The tournament was moved from the Salem Civic Center to the indoor courts at Tech because of rain.

Justin Young and Drew Anderson of Northside captured the doubles title by defeating Robert Light and Jared Poff of Salem 6-2, 7-5.

Castro, Bill Kniskern, Jamar Wright, Carey Mason and Ryan Traylor of William Byrd won singles matches to help the Terriers earn a 5-0 victory.
