Out-of-state firms come to Salem

Two out-of-state companies have opened for business in Salem.

Tom Turner of Hall Associates Inc. of Roanoke, who negotiated both leases, said Thursday that McCormick Insulation Supply Inc. of Owings Mill, Md., has rented 6,300 square feet at 626 Chapman St.

It is the third Virginia location for McCormick, which supplies insulation to contractors.

Also, Royal Cup Inc. of Birmingham, Ala., has opened a 3,600-square-foot distribution facility at 1435 Lakeside Circle. The company distributes coffee, tea, water and related products. The Homestead and Hotel Roanoke are two of the company's regional accounts.

Georgia-Pacific refinancing OK'd

Georgia-Pacific Corp. has proposed refinancing a portion of its $135 million debt for the recent addition at its Big Island paper mill. The company wants $10 million of the money raised by bonds to be exempt from taxes.

The Bedford County Board of Supervisors has agreed to permit the refinancing through the Bedford County Industrial Authority.

Nekoosa Packaging Corp, a subsidiary of Georgia-Pacific that owns the plant in Big Island, financed the project with industrial development revenue bonds. All but $19.8 million, the maximum allowable by the state, were issued as taxable bonds.
