THE WEEK'S BEST IN HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETICS

BASEBALL

DAVID LEONARD, Lord Botetourt

Leonard pitched a one-hitter in a 2-1 loss to regular-season Blue Ridge District champion William Byrd. He struck out seven. Two days earlier, he threw a four-hitter in which he struck out 10.

SCOTT MARKHAM, BRANDON PAINTER, Liberty

These two allowed only one earned run as they pitched the Minutemen to a 3-2 victory over Amherst County and a 1-0 triumph over Rustburg. Painter also had three hits and drove in Markham for the lone run against Rustburg.

CATCHER, PITCHERS, Franklin County

The Eagles have a lively battery. Pitchers Brian Strong and Larry Bowles, both juniors, ran their record to 6-0 each as they stopped William Byrd 5-1 and Pulaski County 11-2. Strong gave up one earned run and four hits to beat Byrd in a matchup of regular-season district champions while Bowles threw four innings of no-hit baseball against Pulaski County. He also went 4-for-6 with two doubles and three RBI. Catcher Ashley Moore went 6-for-8 in the two games. He also pitched three innings against Pulaski County.

KEN HOUTZ, Galax

Houtz was 4-for-4 with a double, two RBI and three stolen bases as the Maroon Tide beat Bland 7-5.

SPENCER RICHARDSON, Northside

Richardson threw a four-hitter, went 3-for-4 with a double, knocked in a run and scored twice as the Vikings beat Rockbridge County 7-3.

SOFTBALL

SARAH OGILVIE, Cave Spring

In victories over Alleghany (12-4) and Franklin County (8-2), Ogilvie went 4-for-8, including two homers and a double, and knocked in six runs. She hit seven homers, drove in 32 runs and had a .500 batting average during the regular season.

LISA CARR, DANIELLE WILSON, Liberty

Carr stole four bases against Rustburg, giving her 50 for the season. She has yet to be thrown out. Wilson was 4-for-4 against Amherst County with two singles, a double and triple in the Minettes' 8-7 victory.

ERIN WEAVER, Northside

Weaver, a junior, pitched a no-hitter against Alleghany in a 5-0 victory that knocked the Mountaineers out of a three-way tie for first place in the Blue Ridge District. Weaver struck out nine and walked only one as she pitched the first softball no-hitter in the school's history.

KATHLEEN MILLER, LIZ WARNICK, Roanoke Catholic

Miller was 4-for-6 in a 16-4 victory over Hargrave Military and a 10-6 triumph over Stuart Hall. She had a pair of two-run homers and knocked in six runs for the two games. Warnick was 5-for-7 with two doubles and four RBI.

SOCCER

CARRIE MOORE, Patrick Henry

Moore had both goals in a 2-0 victory over Cave Spring for the Roanoke Valley District tournament championship. She also had three assists in a 7-0 win over Northside and scored a goal in a 2-0 victory over North Cross.

TRACK

GILES BOYS, GIRLS

Megan Noble and Keeli Whetzel combined for 781/2 points as the Spartans swept to the Three Rivers District title. Noble finished first in the long jump, triple jump and both hurdle events. She set meet records in the hurdles and a school mark in the 300 intermediates. Whetzel didn't score any firsts, but she did place in six individual events and went over the 500-point mark for her career to place third all-time at the school. In the boys' competition, Kevin Slusser scored 421/2 points as he won both hurdle events, ran a leg on the 400-meter relay team that finished first and scored in four other field events.

COVINGTON BOYS

The Cougars won their first Pioneer District title in 10 years as Cory Whitaker, Brent Young and Dusty Roman scored 69 points among them. Whitaker scored 30 points and set a meet and school record in the high jump (6 feet, 8 inches) while recording personal bests in the long jump (20-91/4) and triple jump (41-51/2). Young was first in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs while Roman was first in the triple jump with a 42-6 and had a personal best in the long jump (18-83/4).

TENNIS

MANDY HARLESS, LESLIE ADKINS, Radford

Harless ran her record to 14-3 and won the Three Rivers District singles title. The three losses were all to Group AA players; she didn't lose a set against Three Rivers District players in the regular season or tournament. Adkins teamed with Harless for doubles and they went 14-3 without losing a set against district competition. This was the 14th district title in 15 years for Radford, including its New River District play.

PATRICK HENRY BOYS' TEAM

Three players capped off great seasons as PH won the Roanoke Valley District title with a 6-3 victory over Cave Spring. No.1 singles player Addams England was 10-0 in district play and never lost a set. Overall, he was 13-2. Andrew Thomas and Hunter Carson, playing No. 1 doubles, went 11-2 and won the RVD title by avenging their two losses against Cave Spring. Thomas, playing No. 2 singles, was 13-0 and hadn't lost a set.

SALEM GIRLS' TEAM

The Spartans qualified for their third consecutive Region III tournament after going 12-0 during the regular season and winning the Blue Ridge District title. Betsy Hall and Taylor Bruce are unbeaten in singles while Jill Archer, who finished second in the state a year ago, has one loss at No.1 singles. Archer and Hall are unbeaten in No.1 doubles.
