NationsBank closing downtown office

PULASKI - NationsBank is closing its downtown Pulaski location on North Washington Avenue in January 1997 and consolidating its operations into the Peaks Knob branch on White Boulevard.

Julie Reynolds, a spokeswoman with the Charlotte, N.C.-based bank, said the company is closing the downtown location to become more efficient. Many of the bank's Pulaski County customers used both locations.

"We're constantly looking at our banking centers to monitor traffic flow and how we serve our customers," she said.

Most of the employees from the downtown location will be transferred to Peaks Knob. The bank hopes any job cuts will be absorbed through turnover. There are 12 employees between the two locations.

NationsBank has had the two Pulaski County locations since 1992.

Trucker receives company's top award

CHRISTIANSBURG - Christiansburg trucker Michael "Butch" Martin received the Roadstar award, the highest level of recognition for professional truck drivers given by Landstar Systems and its subsidiary, Landstar Ligon. The award was presented to Martin this month at the annual convention in Hilton Head, S.C.

Of Landstar Ligon's 1,552 drivers, only Martin and four others received Roadstar awards. The award is a lifetime award for careers that exemplified consistently high levels of safety, productivity and customer service.

A Ligon driver for more than 10 years, Martin is also a recipient of a Million Mile Award for safe driving.

Landstar Ligon president Joe Fitzgerald said, "Butch puts the 'pro' in professional truck driver. ... He exemplifies the best in the industry. It takes a very special operator to achieve a million accident-free miles, and Butch has done just that."

Landstar System is one of the largest truckload carrier businesses in North America.

Martin lives with his wife, Margaret, in Christiansburg.
