Virginia withstood a furious rally from second-ranked Loyola (Md.), and escaped with a 10-9 victory Saturday in the semifinals of the NCAA women's lacrosse tournament in Bethlehem, Pa.
The Cavaliers advance to their first national championship game since 1993.
Virginia had a 10-5 lead with 15 minutes remaining. Loyola (14-2) then scored the next four goals to make the score 10-9 with 52 seconds left, but got no closer. Heather Hotchkiss led the Cavaliers (14-3) with three goals.
Virginia will play Maryland, a 6-5 winner over Princeton in the other semifinal, for the national championship today at 3 p.m.
In other college sports in the region:
* Jason Dorsett pitched eight strong innings as Methodist defeated Ferrum 13-6 in the NCAA Division III South Regional baseball tournament in Fayetteville, N.C.
Billy Chapman led Methodist (33-7) with two hits, two runs and four RBI. The Panthers were led by John Poindexter with three hits and Patrick Muncher had two hits and two RBI.
Ferrum (34-10-1) will take on Millsaps today at 1 p.m. If Ferrum wins, the Panthers will face Methodist at 4 p.m. Ferrum will have to defeat Methodist twice.
* The Virginia men's golf team finished 12th at the NCAA East Regional golf tournament in Kiamesha Lake, N.Y., and missed qualifying for the NCAA Championships by one stroke.
The Cavaliers finished at 911. North Carolina State shot a 893 to win the tournament with Florida finishing second at 896.
Virginia's Lewis Chitengwa qualified for an NCAA individual berth which will be held on May 29-June 1 at the Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tenn.
PREPS Byrd blanks Salem in soccer
Michael Berry scored a goal and assisted on another as William Byrd blanked Salem 4-0 in the Blue Ridge District boys' soccer championship game in Lexington.
Greg Johnson, Bryan Humphreys and Matt Burton scored the other goals for the Terriers (13-3), and Michael Creasy was in goal to record the shutout. Both teams advance to the Region III tournament against teams to be determined.
* At River's Edge, shortstop Jenny Garis had a three-run homer, a single and made an outstanding catch to end the game as Holy Cross defeated Lynchburg Christian Academy 11-9 to win the Blue Ridge Conference softball championship.
The Gaels reached the championship by beating Roanoke Valley Christian 11-5 in a semifinal. Dana Hurt went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI for Roanoke Valley Christian and Arin Assaid went 2-for-3.
Lynchburg Christian beat North Cross 20-13 to gain a title berth. Lisa Baetz went 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI in a losing effort for North Cross.
Hurt smashed a three-run homer in the top of the seventh as Roanoke Valley Christian came from behind to beat North Cross 11-10 in the consolation game.
* North Cross won the Blue Ridge Conference girls' tennis championship with a 9-0 win over Lynchburg Christian Academy.
Elizabeth Melchionna, Summers Mattern and Laura Houston of North Cross were selected to the all-conference team. Melchionna, Mattern and teammate Betty Ashton Andrews were chosen for the all-tournament team. North Cross coach Carol Eggleston was named coach of the year.
* Brandon LaCroix of North Cross shot a first-round 74 to tie for the lead on the Plantation Junior Tour, which is playing at Wedgeville Plantation in Georgetown, S.C.
LaCroix is tied with Tommy Branch of Vidalia, Ga., with the final round to be played today.
RiverDawgs notch 2-0 victory
Andy Kwon scored twice for Roanoke as the RiverDawgs beat the Braddock Road Falcons 2-0 in a soccer game at Cave Spring Junior High.
Kwon, who attends Duke University, scored at the 29:30 and 36:00 minute marks of the second half.
His second goal was assisted by Radford alumnus Ian Spooner.
