UVA MAKES FINAL FOUR IN LACROSSE CAVALIERS THROTTLE HARVARD 23-12

Virginia showed no ill effects of a three-week layoff and Doug Knight was as good as new after a four-week break as the Cavaliers advanced to the Division I men's lacrosse final four for the third year in a row.

Third-seeded UVa got five goals each from Knight and David Curry, who was at Division III Gettysburg at this time a year ago, and routed Harvard 23-12 in the first meeting between the teams since 1955.

UVa (11-3) will meet Johns Hopkins (8-5) in the second NCAA semifinal Saturday at 3 p.m. in College Park, Md. The first semifinal will pit 1994 champion Princeton (12-1) against 1995 winner Syracuse (11-3) at noon.

Harvard, which entered Sunday's action on an eight-game winning streak, was little match for the Cavaliers. Virginia led 21-6 after three quarters and played mostly reserves, including its second- and third-team goalies, in the final period.

Chris Wojcik and Mike Ferucci had four goals apiece for the Crimson, which finished 12-3.

UVa senior Tim Whiteley, the leading active scorer in Division I tournament play, assisted on five goals during one stretch and finished with eight points on two goals and six assists. He has 236 points for his career, three less than Kevin Pehlke's school record.

Knight's five goals gave him 52 for the season, tying the school record he set in 15 games last year. He has played in 13 games this season, none since April 21, when he suffered a separated left (shooting) shoulder in the ACC championship game against North Carolina.

The quarterfinal games were held under a doubleheader format for the first time, which is why Harvard and Virginia met at Homewood Field, home to Johns Hopkins' nationally renowned program.

Sixth-seeded Johns Hopkins, whom many considered a favorite on its home field, built a 7-0 halftime lead before holding off No.2 Maryland 9-7.
