Major freight haulers have Roanoke plans
Two national freight companies - Federal Express Corp. and Great Coastal Express Inc. - on Monday announced plans to move into Roanoke AirPark, a Thirlane Road industrial property next to United Parcel Service and Roanoke Regional Airport. Ralph Williams of Copty & Co. of Roanoke represented the owners of the property, heirs of the Andrews family of Roanoke, in both transactions.
Regional Development Group Inc. of Orlando, Fla., will build a 50,000-square-foot facility to lease to Federal Express, a Memphis, Tenn., air cargo carrier. The facility, on 5 acres, represents an investment of $3million, said Doug Hooker, president of Regional Development.
Quinn Thomas of Woltz & Associates, who represented Great Coastal Express Inc., a Chester, Va., trucking company, said it is buying 15 acres to build a terminal. John Grover, vice president, said Roanoke ``has become a strong market for us. Our customer base is growing, particularly within the mail order industry."
Grover said Great Coastal, now on Plantation Road, would invest $1.5 million in the project.
