RIVERLAWN STUDENT IS RUNNER-UP IN RIF COMPETITION

Riverlawn Elementary School student Wesley Joyce is a national runner-up in the 1996 Reading Is Fundamental National Reading Competition, sponsored by the Metropolitan Life Foundation.

As an award winner, he will get a $100 U.S. Savings bond, a library of books, magazine subscription and dictionary. A $100 prize will also go to the Pulaski County Public Library RIF project for the purchase of children's books.

Hundreds of thousands of youngers nationally took part in the program to meet age-based reading goals. This was RIF's 30th year of providing books for young people, all of whom got a chance to enter the random drawing for awards.

"We congratulate Wesley's family and the dedicated RIF volunteers for making reading a priority in his childhood," said RIF President Ruth Graves. "Wesley and the 1996 National RIF Reader, Crystal Fraley of Michigan, embody the spirit of the 3.8 million children in RIF programs across America who are on their way to becoming lifelong readers and learners."

Wesley's achievement was among those noted in April at RIF's "Reading is Fun Celebration" at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.
