Bell to cut rates for Internet access

Bell Atlantic said it will reduce its rates this summer for Integrated Services Digital Network service, a high-speed service used to connect with the Internet.

Bell said the new rates, which are 15 percent to 86 percent below current prices, will be available to residential customers in New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania and Virginia, pending approval of each state's public-utility commission.

Under the plan, a 20-hour package during the peak time of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. would cost $31, down 40 percent. A 500-hour package would be $120, cut 81 percent. |-Staff report

Tech group develops wireless software

Virginia Tech's Mobile and Portable Radio Research Group has developed an interactive software tool, SMT Plus 1.0, for planning, simulating and installing indoor wireless communications systems. The software was presented recently at a Cellular Telephone Industry Association conference in Dallas, said group director Ted Rappaport.

The software displays signal strength and interference patterns on blueprints to aid in placing wireless base stations. The group also has designed accompanying software tool, Sitebuilder 1.0, to create floor plans for use with the base-station locator software.
