Four Ferrum College and two Old Dominion Athletic Conference players were named Monday as first-team selections to the NCAA Division III All-South Region baseball squad.
The area honorees include Ferrum pitching ace Jimmy Hamilton, second baseman David Jones (of Stuart) and outfielders Luther Headley and Pat Daly. Catcher Jared Beck of Emory & Henry and Lynchburg designated hitter Justin Mason were the ODAC honorees.
Washington and Lee outfielder Graig Fantuzzi was a second-team choice, the Generals' first all-region player since Thad Ellis in 1980.
Four other ODAC players and Ferrum first baseman Jason Wilson also made the second squad.
NCAA South Region champion Methodist (N.C.), which plays at Salem this week in the Division III World Series, had two first-team choices in pitcher Tim Adkins and third baseman Bill Chapman.

PREPS Byrd wins Blue Ridge baseball title
Justin Likens fired a complete game two-hitter as William Byrd defeated Salem 4-0 to win the Blue Ridge District baseball tournament championship at Salem Memorial Stadium.
The Terriers (16-4) scored three runs in the fourth and one in the fifth. Brian Jones went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI and Parker Humphreys was 2-for-3 with two RBI.
In the semifinals, William Byrd got a complete-game pitching performance from Chris Manning to shut out Lord Botetourt 3-0. Manning struck out 10 and allowed only four hits. Tim Sink had three hits for the Terriers. Ricky Eubanks was 3-for-3 and scored two runs to help Salem down Rockbridge County 5-1 in the other semifinal. R.J. Beckwith picked up the win, allowing six hits and striking out seven.
* William Byrd's Miguel Castro knocked off Martinsville's Brad Biga 6-3, 7-5 to advance to the individual championship in the Region III boys' tennis tournament in Martinsville.
Castro will face Amit Patel of Fieldale-Collinsville at 1 p.m. today. Patel downed Biggs Cannon of Jefferson Forest 6-1, 6-0. In the doubles competition, Northside's Justin Young and Drew Anderson defeated Patel and Brad Harmon 6-1, 6-3. The Northside team will take on Brookville's Spencer Baird and Roland Stephan for the title at 3 p.m. today.
In the team competition, William Byrd knocked off Fieldale-Collinsville 8-1 and Jefferson Forest defeated Martinsville 6-3. Castro defeated Patel 6-0, 6-1 in the team competition to lead the charge as teammates Darrin Pearson, Bill Kniskern, Jamar Wright and Ryan Traylor all won singles matches. The team finals begin at 9 a.m. today.
* Albemarle defeated Cave Spring 1-0 in the Northwest Region girls' soccer tournament in Albemarle to end the Knights' season.
Albermarle's Heather Terry notched the lone goal eight minutes into the first half. The Knights were outshot 19 to 10. Albermarle goalie Erin Ewing had nine saves and her counterpart Heather Krause had four saves.
* Eric Millard and Brady Warr each scored two goals as Salem destroyed Magna Vista 9-0 in a Region III boys' soccer quarterfinal in Forest. John Andrews added two assists for the Spartans, who will take on Jefferson Forest in Forest on Wednesday.
In another quarterfinal, Nelson County defeated Martinsville 4-2. Nelson County will take on William Byrd on Wednesday.
* Jason Cohen scored two goals as Albemarle defeated Patrick Henry 3-2 in the Northwest Region boys' soccer quarterfinals in Charlottesville.
Bryan Lewis and Mark Levan each scored for PH and Patrick Barritt added two assists. Patrick Henry outshot Albermarle 24-10.
ETC. Fleming's Stokes headed to Hagerstown
James Stokes, Timesland boys' basketball Player of the Year, has signed with Hagerstown Junior College and will join Bobby Wimbush of Group AAA champion George Washington-Danville in going north next winter.
Stokes led William Fleming to the Group AAA tournament semifinals for the third time in four years. He averaged 19.6 points and 11.4 rebounds per game.
The best game of his career came when he scored 40 points to lead the Colonels past J.E.B. Stuart 100-87 in overtime in a first-round state tournament game.
* Chris Hansen has been named the men's and women's swimming coach at Virginia Tech. Hansen, 28, replaces Wayne Norris, who resigned last season to pursue other opportunities. Brian Bushon, heading diving coach, and graduate assistant Amy Brehl will remain on the staff. The pair served as co-coaches temporarily when Norris left the program.
Hansen was most recently an assistant coach at Villanova. He also has served as an assistant at East Carolina and the University of North Carolina.
* Jalenda Newman of Lynchburg College has been named to the GTE Academic All-District III College Division Softball Team. Newman (Staunton River), a senior pitcher, has a 3.37 cumulative grade-point average in child development. She was 12-6, including 12 consecutive victories at one point, with a 2.46 ERA and 47 strikeouts through 119.1 innings. She pitched 16 complete games in 20 starts and recorded two shutouts while walking 25 batters. She established 11 season and career pitching records and leaves the college with 15 school softball records.
* Pairings are set for the 1996 NCAA Division III baseball championship beginning Thursday at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium.
There will be four games Thursday, with Marietta (Ohio) meeting Upper Iowa at 10 a.m., William Paterson (N.J.) meeting Bridgewater (Mass.) State at 1:30 p.m., Methodist facing Rensselaer at 5 p.m. and Cal Lutheran meeting Wisconsin-Oshkosh at 8:30 p.m.
The series runs from Thursday to Tuesday, May 28.
