ROANOKE COLLEGE has recently awarded three local alumni the Roanoke College Medal, the highest honor that can be bestowed on its alumni. The recipients are Charles "Hap" Fisher, '28, of Salem; Deanna Wagner Gordon, '60, of Vinton; and Harry T. Haskins Jr., '81, of Salem.
Fisher is a scientist, inventor, author and professor who holds 72 patents and has written or co-written more than 200 scientific publications.
Gordon has been an educator and administrator for 36 years; she was named superintendent of Roanoke County public schools in 1994.
Haskins was chief of Salem police from 1975 until he retired in 1995. He also founded the Cardinal Criminal Justice Academy in Salem.
The Roanoke College Medal recognizes alumni who represent the ideals of leadership, intellectual integrity, and good citizenship through their professional accomplishments and through their service to their community and alma mater.
ARDELL STONE SCHOOL OF DANCE students recently competed in the Dance Makers, Inc. Regional Dance Competition held in Charlotte, N.C.
The members of the junior performing group are Amanda Barnhart, Amelia Davis, Michelle Davis, Betsy James, Samantha King, Kara Morgan, Diane Newman, Samantha Nichols, Lyndsey Reynolds, Ashley Stuart and Jennifer Wilson. They won first place lyrical ballet and second place tap in the Junior Line Division.
Members of the senior performing group are Sarah Clyborn, Alicia Davis, Amanda Grinnell, Amanda Harpold, Melissa Kell, Ann Lawson, Tara Lee, Maggie Light, Amber Mayhue, Misha Paiement and Shannon Stanger. The group won second place tap, second place jazz, and second place lyrical in the Senior Line Division.
Both groups qualified for the National Competition, to be held in Myrtle Beach, S.C., this summer.
